Dr. Pepper in New York

While we were living in New York, the Coca Cola Bottlers decided to introduce Dr. Pepper to the New York market. The T.V. was loaded with the preparation, as if it was another D Day for the invasion of Europe! For weeks, this was a constant drumbeat of advertisements of Dr. Pepper coming.

Now we lived about five miles from the plant where I worked. Each day, around the time I was leaving to go home, I would call my wife and ask if there was anything she wanted me to get from the deli on the way home. On this day, I had stopped and was in the back of the deli to pick up something.

I happened to see they had one six pack of Dr. Pepper. I yell at the cashier, “Hey, I see you have Dr. Pepper!” He replied, “Yes, we knew you would be in.” When I got home, my three children jumped on the six pack immediately since they had not had a Dr. Pepper since leaving Texas. Just Sayin…RJS

Mr. Robert, they must have liked you a lot for them to save you a case of Dr. Pepper... But Dr. Pepper is a Pepsi product here in Florida, Pepsi own Pizza hut and Frito-Lay... just saying

Interesting story. Note how the “New Yorkers” saved it for you. Not the image most people have of New Yorkers.
My favorite Dr Pepper moment—At Ft Sill Oklahoma in August after a week in the artillery field I had a night off. Went to an air conditioned movie theatre and watched the movie with a mega size Dr Pepper.
The Dr Pepper you brought home—-16 ounce bottles?

The Dr. Pepper I brought home was a six pack and possibly 16 oz. I have never paid attention to the size of standard soda bottles. Just Sayin...RJS

My love affair with Dr. Pepper began at an early age...always been my favorite "soda pop" for 65yrs+, my Dad's, as well. He attended SMU in Dallas for grad school (Perkins School of Theology) and got used the "cane suger" version that apparently was altered in the 60s to other sweeteners, while the bottling plant in, I believe Denton(?) was/is the remaining "original recipe" plant, at least as far as living in Kansas afforded. Each and every trip of my childhood visits to relatives or friends in Texas, was an excuse for my Dad to take a side trip off the path home, and load up several cases of "true Dr.Pepper" to take back home to Kansas.
We did our best to "ration" them as long as possible....hehehe.
Kind of an exercise in restraint...sorta took, but not really...lol.
I could be wrong about it being Denton, but I know it was somewhere between Dallas and the Oklahoma border. Funny how something as benign as a fizzy, tasty drink could conjure up such childhood memories, but thanks RJS, for doing so. Getting ready to fix a sandwich for lunch with some potato salad I made....just might have to wash it down with a cold "DP"....lol.

Fixorfish: You should go to
Google. There was a world of information and many different bottling operations, to my surprise. I graduated with a BBA from North Texas. I believe we took a trip to a local area Dr. Pepper plant in Waco. Since this was before 1957, things could have changed. I am amazed at how it has spread. Just Sayin...RJS

Mr. Robert, my brother and I use to drink Dr pepper when we were kids it had 2-4-10 on the bottles in a circle well I slowed down drinking so many of them. Then years later in 2010 my kidneys quit ( nothing to do with Dr Pepper) and my brother was going to give me a kidney and found out that he was in stage two kidney failure which lots of people is in stage two and don't even know it, well the Dr said they would not take his plus he's a smoker and has high blood pressure. I can remember the last time he's drank water, and still today Dr Pepper is all he drinks and his kidneys are still in stage two...I guess you never know, as always thanks for your stories, Chuck

Mr. Robert, you're right stage 5 is kidney failure, I have a stepson that had a stroke about 4 years ago and now been in stage 4 about 3 1/2 years because of the stroke so far he's doing ok. We'll be praying for your health to stay good 🙏 Chuck and Kay
