Good Day in Kodiak
Alabama Fishing

Wife and I are visiting youngest daughter in Kodiak, Alaska. Her husband is a lifer in Coast Guard and stationed in Kodiak. Great to spend 10 days with granddaughters who are 9 and 6.

Temps back in Alabama are about 100 and Kodiak about 65 - 70. A welcomed break.

Day before yesterday took a charter with the whole crew and ended up with 51 lbs of vacuum sealed filets from halibut, kings and silvers, rock fish and ling cod. Was great to see wife and grandkids catching fish.

This is a beautiful area, but I have now been here three times, and it will good to get them back in lower 48 next June. Looks like they may land in Jacksonville, FL which is just a six or six and half drive from home.

Did you get to do any crabbing? When my ships would stop I would throw a crab ring off the pier and steam crabs in the MWR shack on the pier. Nothing like fresh hot crab just minutes out of the water. I’ve had King Crab stateside but it seems rubbery. Same thing with frozen fish. I guess I’ve been spoiled.

Thanks for the memories!

No crabbing. Thought we might get to buy some directly off one of the boats, but none yet.

Went salmon fishing yesterday. One bite and several snags.

I used to jig a small Kastmaster and load up on flounder off the wharf. I would fish off the unused wharf past the other two active piers. Jig the Kastmaster in water just shallow enough to see it flash and watch it disappear and have a fish on. That was 30 to 50 years ago. I don’t even know if that wharf is still there. I’ve caught 20 lb halibut off the wharf also.

I didn’t specify: I was still on the base. I just looked at a satellite picture and the old wharf is still there. Have fun. I also fished the Buskin River and caught rainbows, Dolly Varden, and salmon. Also did well on the Russian River for salmon.
