Antique Jon boat from hell!

About eight year's ago I and my brother Kelly found a 1962 fiberglass and wood Jon boat w/ 75hp Johnson outboard. It was a labor of love project boat, just something fun for two mechanical brothers to play with and customize to suit us. We painted it Dessert camouflage on the outside with gray and black interior replaced All electronics put in the stern drive assembly in it, repair the motor lift and tilt. The thing was, it's 1960s technology controls and things and not as smooth as they are now. I mean you had two different gear and throttle switches, and it was possible to accidentally put the boat in drive before you were ready to leave the boat dock. I was posting pictures of the boat on Facebook on the work we did, customizations and everything had it all legal and ready to hit the water. I was showing pictures to my cousins and friends and whatnot made a big fuss about how nice it looked This one lady saw it and tried to offer me a bunch of cash for it as she wanted to buy something for her 10th wedding anniversary as a gift to her husband, they were well in their 50s and lived about a hundred miles from here on a lake. I really didn't want to sell it as it truly was one of a kind, because we hand painted everything with pole holders and LED lights all around it and it was a good looking little boat. we might have had plus buying the boat and all the customizing we did $1,000 into the boat plus a lot of Labor. she offered me $7,000 cash. She wouldn't give up, I sold it. They took it out one sunny morning on the lake and he had the boat in gear, full throttle upon starting it..took off like a bat out of hell across the lake throwing them to the back going 60mph headed for the dam! Both jumped into the water, but the boat turned away and ran circles around the lake without anyone in it until it ran out of gas. She acted like I did something wrong. I showed them the two levers #1. Gear #2. Gas/ throttle lever. I made them sign an as is agreement. We can rehabilitate old boat's, but we can't fix stupid. 🤣

So it needed the shifter repaired for safety purposes. I always figured Jon boats are best used for concrete work. Wonder if they spent few hours and $10 to get shifter set up to click into neutral forward and reverse? If that’s a real true story. Holy moly. Why would anyone leave throttle WIDE OPEN when trying to start an Outboard?

Was it an Outboard that is always in gear? Like a Wally Gator? You spin it around backwards for reverse? They work great but safety is always the first priority.. well it is supposed to be anyways.
