Hello! My husband and I are retirees and enjoy fishing! We also enjoy camping at Mayport Naval Base which provides opportunities for fishing off the jetties. We are typically lake fishing in Georgia, but would like to learn more and experience salt water fishing at its finest.

Good morning, Teach, and welcome to the Stage!!! I have heard of teachers of pe, but not rt. So, what are teachers of rt?

Saltwater fish love live shrimp. Fish them with a Carolina rig. All kinds of ideas are on YouTube.

Thank you for the recommendation! We fished with shrimp last time but it seemed something kept taking the shrimps insides and leaving the shell on the hook

RT is for Respiratory Therapy I have developed college RT programs which included writing and teaching courses

Welcome aboard Teacher. Those Jetties should be holding some Reds, Black Drum and some Sheepshead. Try using some Fiddler crabs or Blue crab bodies. Take off the shell, legs and claws. Then break the body in half and use a half only.

I fish the jetties a few times every year. 20lb braid w/ a 18-24” fluorocarbon leader. A 1/4 ounce jig head and a live shrimp will catch everything thing that lives there. Cast parallel to the rocks with a slow lift and fall retrieve. Occasionally try a fiddler crab or in the fall, cut ladyfish on a fishfinder rig for a bull red. Good luck!

The crabs and the pinfish like to do that. Use a very small hook, #12, and catch them and then use them for bait.

A few hundred yards before the Mayport USCG Station you can park and fish. Redfish, trout etc are caught there regularly. Couple of decent restaurants a little further down the road towards the ferry.

Welcome aboard Go navy. Go to the introduce yourself page and let everyone know you're new to the Stage and fishing. We have over 60,000 on this site and only a few will see this post. There are a lot from Jacksonville that fish the St. Johns river fresh and salt. You might get a lot of info that way.

Welcome to the stage, Teach! This is a great place to learn. I’ve gained so much knowledge and am catching a lot more than I ever have, thanks to the generosity and experience of the folks here. I taught for at the college level for years, too (intro to psychology), but I’m definitely the student here. Looking forward to some pics from you!

I must be doing something wrong. I have tried several things as recommended and the only fish I have caught looked deep red and bloated in the face. I'm not even sure what kind it was and it was a little small so I released it.
