I went Halibut fishing out of Eureka, California the weekend before last. Didn’t know till a couple days before that the season would close the day after we went. Got a charter boat with Tim from Reel Steel Charters. There were 5 of us on the boat. We all got out fish! It was great although a slow start. I’m in the second picture with a 30 pounder. The first one is a 40#er and the big one weighed in at 74 #s! A great day was had by all!!!

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about! #1 on my bucket list to catch them 'buts out of Seward AK!
Nice Matt's!! I'll have to check the reg's on where the line is because I'm pretty sure halibut is open year-round in the Santa Cruz area.

I don’t know Invader. I understood it was the whole State. Let me know if you can find out anything.

There are two types of halibut in California,
The Pacific Halibut and the California Halibut. The Pacific Halibut season just closed, the California Halibut season is year around.
The CA halibut has rounded dorsal and anal fins with a tail that protrudes in the center. The Pac halibut has pointed dorsal and anal fins giving it more of a "diamond" shape. Also the tail is concave from top to bottom. The CA version are thinner than the Pac, which are more meatier, for the same length.
The halibut in the pictures are Pacific Halibut.

Yes, you are correct TJ. We were fishing Pacific Halibut. The California Halibut are inside the Harbor.
I didn’t know their season was different.
