I’m a retired and disabled rather inexperienced fisher woman in Oregon. I’ve never fished for catfish having been told in childhood that their “whiskers” can stab you painfully. Is this true?
Not the whiskers but the top fin spike is very sharp. It canbe quite painful if you don't handle it properly.
Thanks! Do you ever wear gloves?

You can wear gloves but the fins are very sharp and can poke through most gloves. Best is just learn how to handle them.
Okay. Just get out there and practice. Got it. Thanks!

The worst catfish to get finned with are the hardhead catfish and the walking catfish. If you get stuck by either of them you MAY end up going to the Dr. Just learn how to handle them and you will be fine.
I’ve never heard of them. I wonder if they are found in Oregon.

The hardhead maybe found in Oregon. That’s both a salt water and freshwater fish the walking catfish is found here in Florida. I don’t think it’s found by you.
Hope we just have “softer finned” catfish.

Every catfish has the sharp fins and can fin you if not careful. The smaller they are the sharper the fins. Be careful when you release them because that’s when they often get you. Use your long nose pliers to put them back in the water.
Thanks for the tip. I hope to catch one and cook it, though.

What kind of cats you got there? The channel cats are ok and flathead cats are very good eating. Channel cats I usually fillet and soak in milk overnight. The Casein in the milk neutralizes the fishy taste. Works for me. Don’t have blues here so don’t know about them.
Sorry. I haven’t a clue. I appreciate the cooking tip. Hope I get a chance to try it.
Channel Cats are available here in Oregon. John Day River used to be a very good place to hook them but it is not as hot of a place but still productive. They will try to pinch you with lips (bite) that can hurt when removing hook. The sharp bony fins have venom.

When I catch channel cats to keep I cut their tails off so that they bleed out, does the same as soaking and doesn't cost any thing. We don't have flatheads around where I am but they are the best, i have ever eaten.
