What in the world. They say it’s the lack of oxygen. Just wondering if someone had been there could they harvest them and eat them. I saw on the news also that the Florida coral reefs are in danger as well. One scientist said that it has a lot to do with climate change. I am sure that all the trash and junk we humans throw or leave out has something to do with it as well.

Is this Sultan Sea? Not sure, but I saw the same thing while visiting there. The winds push the low oxygen water from the depths of the lake to the surface and the tilapia suffocate every year.

I have a friend who lives close to the Gulf who has told me he won’t eat anything that comes from that area any more.

My thought is that it mostly comes from the fertilizer that they dump on their lawns and golf courses. But, what do I know? The fertilizers promote algae which depletes the O2.

I agree Fly. Look at all the harmful chemicals they use now. It goes in the ground and eventually it ends up in our lakes, dives then the ocean. Then what the commercial fishermen pick up. We don’t stand a chance here in NC with all the rules.

It’s a number of things. Mainly pollution but the heat, lack of storms due to the high pressure we’ve been experiencing have a good bit to do with it too. There’s normally what we refer to as a dead zone in the gulf which varies in size and depth depending on the weather. Most of this is caused by what’s flowing down the Mississippi River, which drains upwards of two thirds of the country. A lot of it is runoff from farmland and the rest from industry. Storms and wave action turn the gulf over and replenish the oxygen levels. Lack of rain also plays a part. We’ve had similar occurrences in the past and they are known as a jubilee. An area of deoxygenated water that traps fish that end up dying. The DWLF will not let you collect the fish as it would be hard to prove where you got them from. Go figure.

By the time they wash ashore they already stink, and then it gets worse 🤢🤮

Hi Mark. I’ve witnessed one firsthand and saw many fish, mostly reds, black drum, stingray and hard heads gasping for air. That’s when folks pick them up but the DWLF will write the tickets. It’s such a waste but it’s the law.

It sure is especially if the fish are fresh. I've only seen it when it's too late to harvest. It is a shame for the waste. Hope you are doing well my friend
