Lake Dixon Escondido...The weeds are up which is a good thing for a bass fisheman as long as you're weedless

Had a chance for a couple hours with my son today.
As I've entered into my 70s, I no longer have the confidence to walk the mountainous shoreline trails; so currently relegated to trying some pier fishing.
My son, Spencer, got this one today on my all-time favorite lure when the Dixon weeds are up. The double fluke.
Rig drawing attached as a download. It is absolutely killer. Throw into or on top of the thickest weeds you can find and bingo. Nearly completely weedless and allows you to fish areas others might skip.
This one came in at 18" 2.4 lbs. He whupped me today.

That's really cool sawheeler! And nice rig--assuming it's one you always have to keep moving? Also great to see a young'n come into their own, grounded with the angling skills you taught them. You did a great job raising your son!

Thank you so much re: your comment on my passing down (all things) to my offspring. It makes an old man proud to get such a comment. Pretty cool. Thanks again.
Re: "...assuming it's one you always have to keep moving:"
Nope.
If the weeds, lily pads or other present sufficient surface cover, you can work this rig as a top water as it is pretty weightless and the large mouths will come up and get it.
More typically, when zig-zagging it through general weeds, with rod tip held down to the surface and twitching sideways (never up and down); it will generally tend to come up some in the water. With a 2-3 second pause, these babies attractively swim downwards as a wounded fish.
If you can get past the 5-knots required, this is absolutely, to me, the best looking presentation I've ever seen. Not an early season lure. But; when the weeds are up, chuck it out there into the thickest you can find.

Couldn't help myself.
As much thrill as I get from watching my sons (or any young person) get one; the competitor in me just couldn't accept getting beat by my kid.
So I went back to the same pier as in the morning by myself just before the park closed.
Got this one. Same fish, just 2-photos.
Avoided the personal skunk.
End of day score 1-1.
5" weightless pumpkin Senko on an EWG hook.
Couldn't help myself.

Lol! I feel ya man--I'm the same way with my kid. So you hauled in that hawg with a straight up T-rigged senko and not the double fluke setup. Hey if the basics gets the job done!

Yes, this was on a weightless Texas rig.
I threw the double fluke for about my first 10-casts; but couldn't produce a strike.
So, with time running out I knew I had to change something up and importantly on Dixon now it had to be weedless.
Lake Dixon is a LMB factory having over the last couple decades caught 3-10lbers from shore on the double fluke setup.
Trust I am removing all my wacky rigged drop shots and tying on all weedless presentations.
May add a frog to my arsenal.
Lesson learned, too many weeds for weighted drop shots which are typically killer earlier in the year and a main technique used here.

Sorry re: poor photo quality.
I was alone, shaking like a leaf after I got her in. The park was about to close and I had a half mile walk back to my car.
This is probably my largest from shore on the double fluke.
Just to give you a feel for what swims in this lake.
Oddly, to me, she was loaded with eggs in late summer.
Park Ranger told me some years Lake Dixon has 2-spawn periods.

Yo Mama
Yo Mama...

I could have put my head in her mouth

I remember this one well.
Throwing my double fluke in the thickest weeds around, she got her nose down in the weeds from which there was no way I could force her out.
Trusting my EWG hooks (once hooked, that hook ain't coming out), I went to total slack line. As soon as I saw her move out of the weeds, I held my rod tip high and brought her in above the weeds.
The EWG hooks do not often let go.
