Son Gregg and I got out for a bit of weekday fishing, he’s got to head out to the middle of nowhere Texas this afternoon so the boss man cut him some morning slack.Caught quite a few smallish bass and crappies but most notably a huge gill. An 11” gill in our parts is equivalent to an 8#bass in our neck of the woods. Throwing 3” Keitech EZ shiners, the gill was a most unusual catch. The crappies and gills are really filled out but the bass are skinny as all get out. The bass pictured measured 17.5 inches but I seriously doubt if it weighed 2#. Wracking my brain as to why, the forage base certainly favors the craps and gills but the apex predators in this body of water seem to be extremely slim

Nice catching Brad. That is a monster Gill! The Gills and Crappie must be pushing the Bass aside at mealtime.
The Bass is skinny but that is a beauty of a Bluegill.

Thanks Fred, the gill was an absolute 🐖, it’s mouth was large enough to choke down a 3” paddletail. I’ve got a few 10.5” gills out of the many thousands I’ve caught through my lifetime but never one quite that big, just can’t understand why the bass are so malnourished.

Yeah Jim, the bass and pickerel in that little lake are pretty much slim little rascals.
Hahaha.. That Gill has a forehead like a Mahi!!

Yeah Doug, it was a bullgill. It was released so I’m hoping to catch it before it heads off to the happy fishing grounds.
great catches there! Glad you got out!
That is indeed a whopper of a bluegill BK! Hmmm I wonder if the bass are being out competed for food? I notice around our area a similar thing...skinny bass from time to time, especially in lakes from small watersheds.
Nevertheless...a nice day spent on the water with your son!
