Colorado Fishing

Hello all.

32 years old and have loved fishing my whole life. Nothing beats a day of casting a line in the sweet sweet sunshine!
I am interested in learning more about good fishing near GJ, CO. I am originally from Utah and that is where I am familiar with fishing from, so I would love to learn more about this area! In Utah, I know where to go where there are not a million people, along with boats and paddle boarders. I miss just fishing off the shore and not being constantly interrupted :( I'm also looking for a book of some sorts with different rigs, knots, etc. that I can pack around in my tackle box to read/look at while fishing. Any help, recommendations, and advice are greatly appreciated! Happy Fishing, Ya'll :)

Welcome to Fishingstage. There are some Colorado Members. Hopefully you find the book you’re after. The state and each city usually have information on local fishing. State has all the locations online and in synopsis. Usually can even simply Google a location for fishing. May take awhile but sooner or later hopefully will find a neat place to fish. If fishing is good it can be busy. It’s also summer and a lot of people are vacationing.

Well, you have the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers at your disposal, but I recommend you find a friend to explore new areas with. There are tons of knots available on the Internet applicable to your needs, too. Find a local bait or fly shop and ask for spots to try. Good luck! Share some pics of your catches!

This is a good synopsis of fishing opportunities in the valley. Remember that even in low water conditions the Colorado and Gunnison rivers are extremely fast flowing. Bait or lures in river water move fast. Corn Lake for stocker trout is easy access. Also West Lake, connected lakes and Highline Lake have trout, bass, gills and crappie. Please remember that the Colorado River is dangerous. Kyacker drowned this week near Palisade. Lots of river rescues this year due to heavy runoff. Grand Junction water supply reservoir also has bass and artificial lures only. Lots of water for a high desert. This weeks triple digit temps are brutal but nice out early. Except I tore up my casting shoulder so I'm out for awhile.

I got a small booklet when I lived for a time in Texas. The Kittle Red Fishing Knot Book by Harry Nilsson. Over 50 fishing knots and is pocket size. Check Cabelas or Sportsmans Warehouse. Great book! Good luck and tight lines!

The Grand Mesa , east of Grand Junction has many lakes and streams available. Many have just opened after the snow melt. Should have some hungry fish. Check with the local US Forest service office and DPW office for suggestions .

If you havent got one pick up the Colorado Fishing Annual booklet. It gives you all the waters, fish available and area regulations. If you look, different lakes, streams and rivers have different minimum legal lengths for each species plus possession limits. That's a good start. Talk to the Rangers at CPW headquarters or at Highline Lake or Corn Lake. Good luck and tight lines!

I beg to differ with him about Vega Res as there are three boat ramps. Also, Switzer lake is ok to fish in as long as you don't want to eat the fish.
The Gunnison river doesn't connect with the Colorado river 'til it gets to Grand Junction.
Enoch res is owned by the city of Fruita and might sell it .

The CPW sells a booklet for $10 titled Fishing the Grand Mesa. It's worth every penny, telling what lakes/reservoirs are there, what's in them, the size is, special regs, if any, how deep they are how to get there, etc. Good info.

The grand mesa is the place.check with the bait shops to what depth the lake trout are hanging out the browns and the rainbows are at a least half that depth. The hand book for your tackle box any main steam sports store. The fun place to find them is a ranger station at most good fishing lakes.Good fishing to all.l like to go fishing with new people and I'm pretty good at it and I could learn something as well. One more thing only keep what you will eat to keep this for the next generations

Welcome, Whittles! Always good to see a fellow fisherwoman here. Don’t know anything about fishing where you live, but this is definitely the place to learn anything you want to know…plus a bunch of stuff you didn’t even know you wanted to know! These folks have taught me a lot and have really helped me to be a much better angler. I’ve gotten plenty of good laughs here, too. We love pics - hope to see some of yours soon. Good luck!
