I’m just an adult girl whose dad taught her to fish before teaching me to walk! And have loved it ever since! I want to learn about the scientific method of the best fishing times but for me the best fishing times are when I’m catching fish!

Welcome to the Stage, Megan. So, what kind of fish are you targeting? Boat, shore, jetty, shore. Give us a hint!

I always taught my daughters to remember to bring a pair of needlenose pliers to remove the hooked fish and a towel to clean your hands. A couple must haves.

Lived in Long Beach for many years, and fished from a kayak in the harbor, off Belmont Shore to Alamitos Bay, and out to the oil islands & breakwater.

Excellent fishing for halibut, spotted/calico/sand bass, and the occasional barracuda, mackerel, Bonito and even white seabass. There is an excellent book "Fish have no hands" by Mike Gardner, who used to guide there. Out of print & hard to find but worth tracking down if you can.

I used to troll a deep diving Rebel lure & sometimes caught & released 15+ halibut in a day, and the occasional bat ray. Lots of bass near the breakwaters & oil islands, tossing swimbaits near the rocks. Not a lot of size, but good quantity & lots of fun on light tackle.

Now the bad news: don't eat anything out of the harbor, It is extremely polluted, due your the 2 rivers that drain LA & flow into the ocean there. But, if you want to do c&r it is a great fishery, with a lot of variety.

Welcome to the Stage Megan. I’ve enjoyed watching my son and daughter hunt and fish over the last 30 years. So many life lessons, so many great shared experiences. Good luck to you. There are lots of friendly and knowledgeable people here to advise you on any aspect of fishing you may have questions about.

Welcome aboard Megan, Nice to have ya. Send some specific questions and you'll usually get an answer PDQ. Sometimes it's even serious, but watch out, we joke around sometimes. Keep Smilin'. Nutz.

Check the tides. Incoming or out going, moving water is the best time. At slack tide the fishing in Long Beach Harbor turns off like a light switch. Low light works best for some of the beach species so early as possible. The wind usually comes up about 10 am and slows the fishing.
Good Luck!
