I'd like opinions on proper boating around fishermen. I was taught that when you went by fishermen you should slow down until you get past them. Trolling or still fishing, it is only courteous to do so. Today we were on Odell lake in central Oregon when a few people stormed by us creating waves that nearly toppled us. One was a guide service. I think it is extremely rude to be so cavalier to fellow fishermen. any thoughts on this subject?

I believe the law here is supposed to be to keep at least 200’ between you, but I will double check. Unfortunately, that rarely happens and there is not enough enforcement of that law.

Definitely 200’ from another boat, and 100’ from shore unless you are in no wake situations.
See I few boaters pay any attention it’s scary!!! Very rarely does any one slow down or move away from me in my little boat. I’m constantly on the look out for them!!Buzz right past creating 4 foot waves that nearly toss me out if I’m not paying attention. And I can’t even just blame pleasure boaters. It seems like the more expensive you fishing boat the less likely you are to have and common courtesy!!
Tight lines

Every boater is responsible for their own wake and damages it may cause.. That being said, most don't give two $h!ts and are just jerks..
Be safe out there!
Good morning everyone that must happen everywhere, same here in Florida we don't have many fisherman left because they don't act that way all we have now are pleasure riders and guides taking people fishing and they are in such a hurry to get from spot to spot.
I don't even fish on weekends anymore and I fish in the back country 2-3 feet of water and catch Red's and Snook, hope everyone has a wonderful day 🎣🙏🎣
Unfortunately, you are definitely not alone in this matter! My most recent experience, trolling from a kayak, was just a few days ago. The lake was not very busy, and a large pontoon boat was approaching me from my port side at a modest speed.
If I kept my pace, the timing of our crossing/meeting would be at hand fairly soon but we both had ample time to react and choose a course of action. I could tell they had no intention of slowing down or diverting their course, so I decided to stop paddling altogether.
I guess this was their cue to speed up, hold a steady course and leave me in their giant wake. It was like they were running a yellow light on the road..."got to get thru before that kayak reaches us!"
I sat there bobbing to and fro until the waves subsided and then started to paddle again. They passed close enough to have easily cast a lure onto the deck...pretty darn close! Maybe they thought they were doing me a favor by speeding by quickly so I could get back to some solitude!?
Very irritating to say the least!

f y, as you know I am a fellow kayaker. Nearly same condition my last outing but with a little 20 ' craft coming with in casting distance of me too. Full throttle not a care or concern in the world. I just sat there with line in the water wondering what is this guy thinking or is he not.
My rule of thumb when I was in my Sea Pro was at least 150' when I could see the craft. Sometimes rounding a bend or a narrow river that wasn't possible and the speed would be reduced.
It's like kids in a snowy parking lot with not even an iota of a brain cell functioning. Just that ( LAM ) look at me attitude.

It's the same all over Vic. It didn't used to be like that, even 25 years ago when I had my bigger boat. The self centered generation, only educated by the "instant boating safety course", have no clue of their responsibilities. Enforcement of the laws is sorely lacking also.

When I started fishing I got 50 lb line. I was bank fishing when some people came trolling about 15 feet from me. I saw my rod tip bending and I pulled to set the hook as I thought I had a fish. 1 of the men went from the front of the boat to the back. His lure had hooked my line. Next time they came by they went further out from me.
The worst I deal with is "kids/young adults" on jet ski's.
Gotta be a special kind of....on them things

Mike, when I was younger I had two jet ski's came up the river that I was fishing on and they seen me and turned around came back even closer to my side of the river I was fishing on and they went back and forth a few times😤 needles to say that made me mad just what they intended to do, well like I said I was young then so the next one came by me I casted my devil horse right across him and somewhere it hooked on and he kept going too bad I only had 20 lb line I lost my devil horse don't know if it caught in the life jacket, arm or who knows I didn't care. That would have been my biggest catch ever 😂
But that was the last time I seen them🎣
Thing is they are a blast to be on. Had a friend on a private who had a waverunner and it was a hoot to run the length of the lake with.
Like with everything else in life. Courtesy given is Courtesy received
Kayaks are the. Motorcycles of the water. Nobody sees them til they cut them off or run over them
