I have been through Silver Spring a time or two and fished not far from there last year at Scotts Cove area.

Both Columbia and Centennial no fee required. But I think they have gates at entrances and unsure what time they open.

Btw would you know if Centennial boat house sells live bait? I called but it's just a recording. They do night fishing this Saturday and I think I'll go with dad. I bet the trout will bite on live bait n Powerbait at night. Trying to find places around that sell bait that's not too far

Centennial emailed me back, they do sell nightcrawlers. I was hoping for grubs or maggots. If I use nightcrawlers I might get a catfish when I want trout.

There is a creek / stream near me that a local fisher put me on to and said plastics wont work here get some night crawlers they catch everything. He said they stocked it sometime in April and this was late May when I came across the fisher and the stream. So hopes of catching trout were rather low seeing that he said the stream was lined with guys for about 2 weeks.

Sure enough plastics should have been left at home. Caught my first ever trout a keeper at that on a night crawler 1st time trying. Went back 2 weeks later another trout on a worm but not a keeper.

Headed back for round 3 next week mainly because I was skunked today at Lake Marburg in PA.

I use the Garcia 4500,5000,5500 there's the older Garcia reels but they are easy to use and clean, don't know what you have but it just takes some practice to get used to it. I can throw a 1/4 ounce jig with them and I'v caught big Reds and Snook they are about all I use, good luck with it..

I actually returned this baitcaster kit today because I wanna get one from bass pro shops here. This Walmart one just seemed cheap. Bass pro has a Garcia Vengeance combo on sale for $49.00 from $109. Do you think this model is worth it ? I'm hoping they can also give me some good info on using it. I'm def not using mono on it like before but not sure if I want braid. I never used it before. Is there a learning curve?

The ones from Walmart are kinda a lower end of the Garcia's, really you should stay away from the $49 one a good Abu Garcia reel alone will start around $79 so maybe the $109 combo maybe a good start. They should be able to help you at Bass Pro Shop. Keep me posted on how to make out at BPS. Chuck 🎣🎣

Dreaming - my son's first "serious" baitcaster combo he purchased 7 yrs. ago was an AG Black Max reel and Vengeance rod. Excellent choice! I think he spent less than $70 at Wallyworld at the time. The reel's still going strong; virtually indestructible (with proper maintenance of course). Once he had the settings dialed in, it rarely backlashed.

As far as the line is concerned, in my opinion it's easier to learn a baitcaster spooled with mono rather than braid. From my experience, mono is easier to troubleshoot when you get an overrun (plenty of YT vids on this) than braid, which, b/c it has no memory, will more likely dig into itself in an overrun. I cringe thinking back on the amount of braid I sacrificed just cutting out the tangles after spending too much time trying to troubleshoot it. I always carry a spare reel or two to change out and worry about the detangling for when I got home.

DC, I have 3 black max AB Garcia's that I bought back around 1998, 1 still in the box, and they are super tough reels I'v caught Bull Reds and Large Snook on them. About all I use are the old style AB Garcia's I must have close to 30 of them which I use to buy them off eBay and rebuild them just a hobby 😂
