It’s not every trip you get 3 nice fish and a “the one that got away” story. The deck hand assured me that the tuna we hooked was “grande”. We fought it for at least 20 minutes on heavy tackle before the hook pulled out.

What is the thinking behind catching sail fish? I know a lot of skill and work is involved but beyond that I don't really understand the desire to catch one.

Sailfish are the fastest swimming fish in the ocean. Fishing for them, like all billfish is pure sport.

When you hire a guide you can learn, and when you are learning you are doing much. In the 50s and 60s I fished with my great uncle who was a guide, at Cedar Key, Fl, and learned much that I still use in fresh, and salt water. Wish I had had more time on the water with him.

That is so true. While bill fishing is very specialized, there are many little details that have broader application.

Ya I’m blessed for sure. Retired here In Costa Rica. I’ve connected with a great charter operator. Been out with him four times and have landed eight sailfish and a couple of Dorado.

About a hour and a half. I haven't been fishing down there in maybe twenty years, or more. Most of my fishing has been for bass and bream. I don't get to fish much anymore, can't drive or even walk much. I figure my brother and I can sit on the pier and wet a line. If I were to catch a fish it would be a bonus, as long as my brother cleans it.

I have to agree with Judge32, just can't see what the attraction is. Yes, I have eaten swordfish (marlin? Blue? who knows?) in a restaurant...meeh... it's ok, but it's not salmon or rockfish...taste-wise. Most tournaments just require touching the leader to say "you caught it",....seems lame to me. As said above... different strokes.
