Dad Shoots Favorite Bird Dog!

This is a true story and one to take to heart. It could happen to you because it was an accident!

Dad had taken both of our bird dogs out rather late in the afternoon for a few hours of hunting and training of both dogs. The area was mostly open meadows with a canyon cutting through that was probably twenty feet deep. There was also a lot of tall grass in clumps about three feet tall, both along the rim of the canyon, and at the bottom of the canyon.

Now, Joe dog was hunting in his usual style, and he always thought he knew better than Dad, or anyone else where the quail might be, and was ranging much further out.
Sid, a German shorthair, was much more obedient, was in the canyon and found the covey at the bottom. Dad had killed one or two birds on covey rise. Joe, hearing the shooting, came running back to take charge of pointing, flushing, and recovery of any killed.

One bird had just flushed and was rising to the top of the canyon to escape. As Dad fired at this rising quail, Joe appears on the canyon rim, and in line with Dad’s shot! The impact of a load of number 8 shot knocks Joe down!

Dad, realizing that he has shot and killed his favorite bird dog, walks back to the house, gets the pickup, and goes and picks Joe up and drives back home. He then gives Joe a pan of fresh milk. It is not a good practice to give dogs milk, but since Joe was as good as dead, it didn’t matter. The whole family is in morning for Joe Dog.

However, the next morning, Joe Dog is up and about as if nothing had happened! I suppose it was the shock of the bird shot had a short-term effect and after he had a chance to sleep it off, he recovered. Or maybe he thought “if you are going to shoot me, I am going to play dead!”

Some time passes and I am in high school. I don’t remember what I needed, but at lunch I walk uptown to go to the drug store.

At a distance, I see a dog sitting in a Cadillac. As I get closer, it is Joe Dog. I walk over pat him and really felt sad because he is no longer our dog. I finally walk away, sad and shed a few tears! Just Sayin…RJS

What, another story about shooting when you shouldn't. Was the dog killed or not?
