New York Fishing, Ohio Fishing, Pennsylvania Fishing, Wisconsin Fishing
Took my buddy’s SIL fishing on Lake Erie yesterday. Keith is new to fishing, but is very enthusiastic about it. I helped guide him to his first perch last year, so I took a few different selections along in hopes of his first walleye. We started with a night crawler harness in about 40’ of water, SE of Kelley’s Island. We drifted along with the NW wind after using my buddy’s castable fish finder as it showed fish at different depths. Not quite fast enough of a drift for the best presentation, so I had Keith pump the rod and be ready after the pause. He caught his first-ever walleye after about 15 minutes. I did not bring a tape measure, so estimated is at just short of the 15” minimum. We took a quick pic, and back it went. I tied on a gold, chromed blade bait and caught Keith’s fish’s brother, nice looking fish, but a good 1/2” short, so back it went 🤷🏼♂️
Keith finally caught a keeper at 17”. I followed with two more shorts on a jigging spoon and a Berkeley, bladed jig. The fish just hammered those. Full commitment, gills deep. Keith followed up with a white bass and my big fish was a 7.3# freshwater drum (what we call a sheephead, around here). That one was released and I ended up with a 4# drum to end the catching. All in all, it was a successful day, just not as productive as we had hoped considering the start we had. Keith was thrilled with his first walleye and I caught my first Erie walleyes as well. Keith caught a 4# dogfish once we got back to the dock as he hadn’t had enough, so he had a 3 species day.
Keith did lose my gold, bladed lure on a bite-off, so there must have been a Northern Pike in the area…oh well, a good day on a Great Lake!

Driving through Chicago on the way there was not fun (about 7 1/2 hours), but 6 on the return trip. Nice to get away and catch up with friends, though.
