We will be going to Merritt Reservoir in July this year for our first time. I know that there's a chance that the water might be low and that the hot July weather of Nebraska can make fishing challenging, but we face that every July. My question is if anyone has had run in's with rattlesnakes or the like while camping there? We will be fishing from our boat but will use the truck camper for sleeping if snake's are a problem. If not then our tent has more room.
Thanks for any reply.
I have not heard of any incidents of rattle snakes, but they can show up any where. There are snake repellants available you can apply around your camping ares.
Thanks. I read in a post somewhere that they had been seen there. It will bring some peace of mind for my wife that someone else didn't think it was a big deal. When we lived in Missouri rattlesnakes were always in the back of your thinking.

I have camped there for many years. I have never heard of anyone seeing any, but they are possible.
There is a site for the lake elevation;

Thanks. Like I mentioned, I'm not that concerned but we need to keep our wives happy and ask since I told her I read it somewhere. I will try to give an update on how we do.
You could also call Merritt Trading Post and see what they say.

Actually I think it was something they posted on Facebook that got me asking for other people's experience's there. The fact that you haven't had any issues there in past visits tells me that we have can look forward to a good experience there in 2 weeks.
Thanks again for sharing.
We went to Merritt Reservoir, south of Valentine, and sad to say that the fishing for us wasn't a successful adventure. We camped by two other fishermen and only one of our three boats had good luck. We were all doing the same things, but at different yet similar places on the lake, but again only one boat had success. But that's how fishing can be.
As far as the camping went, the camp site was grossly misrepresented on the website, and the facilities provided were the most unkept facilities we have ever encountered at a Nebraska Game and Parks camp. Also I am convinced that Cherry county has no law enforcement so Merritt is one place we will never go back to. It was so bad that we only stayed two of the five nights we had paid for.
That is sad to hear. Every time I have been up there has been a good experience, maybe not fishing wise. I have had some bad days fishing. Can you tell me what it was that made you leave? I know things have gotten worse most everywhere the last few years.
The outhouse at the campsite we were at was literally full to the top, and as I said on the Nebraska Game and Parks Facebook site, stunk so bad that the dead would find it offensive. Then we went to take a shower and only wish we had brought a mop with a lot of disinfectant cleaner. And of course there were the campers who thought no law or courtesy applied to them. We camp at many of Nebraska's state parks and this was the worse. NRD parks are always better.
I would have left also. Apparently NE G&P is having a hard time getting good help also. People's attitudes towards others isn't what it used to be. I guess the good old days are a thing of the past. I guess I will see about getting a motel this year. Thanks for the information, wish you better luck next time. I have caught walleye in the Boardman arm and in the Powderhorn areas.
