I had ALWAYS had a habit of bringing home the bass/trout i caught and basically freezing them until I was ready to gut and clean them at a later date because frankly, when I start to cleaning, i end up getting so tired, i get sleepy before I'm ready to cook at which point I either refreeze the filets I've finished or throw them out. NOW I have a freezer FULL of trout I've gotten since January and the few bass that came my way. I actually saw a youtube video the other day that mentioned that NOT at least gutting the catch BEFORE you freeze it can cause illness later from parasites if eaten. IS THAT TRUE??? Please advise. Thanx

Personally I would never freeze a fish before I cleaned it or fileted it. If I needed to wait tell the next day to filet, I'd gut the fish an put on ice for a day tell I could filet them 👍

I've only ever frozen clean fillets. I keep them alive till I'm ready to clean them or put them back if cleaning is not in my future.

If they are frozen fast and not given time to brood bacteria they are completely safe. The commercial guys do it all of the time. The advantage they have tho is that they can flash freeze in a brine solution in minutes, not hours. I have had my customers give me frozen fish multiple times over the past 40 years, guts n all. I'm still kicking and never got sick from eating them. Timing is the key factor, so if you can't flash freeze, gut them and bleed them, then freeze um.

You could end up sick. I always clean and then freeze.

I stop fishing when I have as many as I feel like cleaning.

I agree. Ice them down and do in the morning. I've had banner head boat days when I was just too exhausted to filet 20 fish. Dangerous as well being over tired playing with razor sharp knives. Absolutely no reason to freeze them.
