So, I just passing along some information from a guy that I know who has been fishing a number of the lakes around here. He was just at Detroit reservoir yesterday. Got a number of trout a couple 15 to 17 in. He put them all back. Because they looked unhealthy. He figures they were planted in there no more than 10 days ago. How could they become like that? How's my question to all of you. Has anyone out there noticed this. He does not want to eat trout if the meat is mushy.

Sound off guys. He tells me that there are a number of different hatcheries that are supplying these lakes. Not just the ODFW.

Yes Pictures would help, but another issue could be Water Temperature. When the water gets too warm for Trout, their meat gets mushy and can almost a milky white color, and not be the Nice Pink Meat as they are in colder water. Most Planter’s hit their new surroundings in good healthy condition. I’ve never fished Detroit so I’m not sure if something else is going on or not.

Probably shouldn't put an unhealthy fish back...

There is a disease that is being reported in fish that makes the meat look bad, they say it is contagious to other fish so the idea would be not to put them back.

WHY do they put trout in hot water? Bass, crappie, catfish sunfish of all kinds do well in reservoirs and shallow lakes; they just appreciate a cool lower depth to stay healthy. A Mud flavored trout is Never a taste treat. Hyatt Lake of the 1940-1960's was full of trophy sized bass and big crappie and Bluegills. Millions of baby catfish fed them well. 6' trout were often found in bas bellies. Squaw Lakes were good for family; now, it is Only good for those that can hike a good deal. Have not been there since they closed the roads and made it paddle power only. We had fine camping till the sold off the best sites on the West side for monied home builders Only.
It had summer trout that were Good to eat as it has depths that were cold water fed. Since it turned into a no store, no road, no camping site my entire family of over 30 at times ceased going to Squaw Lakes.
Congrats to Fish and Game and others for ruing a great place for families. The etrout of Summer in Hyatt Lake and the reservoirs always tasted of mud and were soft and yucky.

My experience is that freshly stocked trout have white flesh and it seems that it takes them several months in the wild to become acclimated and for their flesh to become pink or salmon colored and to firm up. That has been my experience with rainbow trout.
