Anyone know of a reliable source for purchasing flies on-line? I used to tie my own, but the vision is fading and I think the end product would be better quality if I just purchased pre-made. Problem is most of the sources I've seen don't have a very good description of what it is you're buying. Color and size are generally there, but not if it's barbless or not. I need barbless flies and I don't want to end up sending them back if they're not. Help?
The tenkara flies are barbless. And they are affordable. Check out tenkarausa. I think you'll be quite pleased.
Whether tying my own or occasionally purchasing some, I simply use my needle nose pliers to mash the barb down. Keeps it simple . . . and hooks come easily out of fish, clothes and . . . ears!
Bob O: yeah, I've done that in the past, it's still not as smooth as one that's manufactured that way. A lot of the water in California can't be fished without barbless hooks and squishing it down with pliers qualifies so a lot of people just do that to comply with the law. I also used to take the time to file them down to make them totally barbless, but I'd just like to buy some that don't have the damn barbs in the first place.
breambug.com
nice. I didn't see where they say they're barbless, so I enquired. Thanks.
Found them guys! Big Y Fly Co. in Colorado at bigyflyco.com. Barbless woolybuggers for .74 each. Probably cost me more to ship them than the flies themselves. But I can't buy them that cheap at the local sportsman's warehouse, and theirs aren't barbless. thank you all
Let us know how they work.
Absolutely! You will get an honest product review.
Squich them down with pliers. Be careful not to dull the hook in the process. Works for me. I even do that on hooks used for bluegills while using worms. Been doing it for decades with great results.
Not worth the extra price for barbless hooks..BUT $0.74 is a steal. Buy a bunch of them while you can at that price. Used to tie my own too. The bodkin got used so much that it started to cut the line and I quit tying. Decided to try it again and went to the local fly tying store and they wanted $45.00 for one. I think it is cheaper to buy them.
Yeah, I used to tie my own cause I sort of enjoyed it and I could put my own twist on a pattern, not because it saved me any money. So I bought a dozen, 6 of each, black and olive. The price went down to .65 or something like that, the flies were about 8 bucks and the shipping was $5. I will keep looking locally.
Here they are. We’ll see how they fish.
Don't give the fish any slack and they should work well.
If I hook up they're working well. If the fish gets off, it's my own damn fault. And honestly, I'm so old and I've caught so many fish in my life, if I never bring another to the net I will have had a very successful fishing career. Can NOT complain. It's why I use barbless. They appear to be well made.
