Hello everyone. I stumbled across this site while camping about a month ago. I haven't fished in many years. I have a 6 year old grandson that comes camping with us and he said " grandpa we should go fishing". Well no self respecting grandpa can say no to that! The last time I went trout fishing was probably in the 1970s with my dad. I am 58 now and my dad has gone on. So last week I went out and picked up a couple of cheap pole and reel combos and a little but of tackle brought it home and told my son about it. The first words out of his mouth were " you are planning a big family fishing trip and only bought 2 poles?" So needless to say we now have three poles in hope's that some day soon they will all be used. Last weekend didn't work out and this weekend didn't workout either however, I went by myself for the first time in my life and caught my limit in 3 hours and met some nice people fishing next to me. In a couple of weeks we are heading camping again and maybe then I can teach my grandson to fish. Until then I will call my outings research. I am enjoying reading all of your posts and learning a lot about something I haven't done in a long time. I am having fun going through dad's old fishing stuff and picking up a little tackle here and there. Watching a lot of YouTube videos on what to do. Anyway thanks for listening. enjoy your weekends and don't let work get in the way!

That sounds truly wonderful. Hope y'all have many great trips together and make lasting memories. Remember to always try to keep it fun for the kid. If they stop havin fun pack up and go do something else. That way they will continue to want to go fishin and the more they go the more they learn. The more they learn the more fish they catch and we all know how much FUN that is. Tight lines. Another Grampa.

That is great advise. Thank you very much. We always enjoy throwing rocks in the water together. I am sure there will be a lot of that too. Enjoy grandpa.

Welcome to the Forum, Saxman. You must be a quick learner if you caught your limit is 3 hrs. What kind of fish? How old is the grandson? Enjoy him!

Trout and 6 years old. I credit reading this site and YouTube not to mention talking with a couple guys at work. Maybe beginners luck? You mean it isn't always like this? Haha

So good to read a story like yours saxmanpdx. Especially compared to what I am about to tell you. On July 4th weekend neighbor across the creek wants me to take his grand kids fishing. Thought hard on this for all of 5 seconds and told him he needs to be with them. He did not want to be going up and down the dock doing everything for them. I mentioned to show them what to do and then all you have to do is watch. He was a little perturbed with me but watching them from my kitchen window all worked out well. 8 year olds can work that fishing pole once you let them do it for them selves. I later got a Thanks from the neighbor.

I think you made the right decision. Good for you. We actually went out today for a bit didn't really catch anything. It was very crowded for my taste. So we found a nice quiet park and practiced casting in the stream. It turn out to be a great outing and we are looking forward to next weekend.

You are blessed my friend to be able to spend time with your grandson. My grandkids are 400 miles north but fortunately our son is into fishing and when work isn't demanding, they have a local pond that my 9 year old grandson and dad go to at least weekly.

One small tip from an experienced Papa of four fishing grandkids who are now working or in college: when they’re young and you take them fishing, be sure to have plenty of snacks; and break ‘em out at the right moments. So, even if the fish don’t cooperate on schedule, or it rains, or the figits are starting...there’s always an enjoyable snack for the youngsters to remember.
