Hi I'm Paul from Leavenworth, Ks. I been fishing locally my whole life at ponds, lakes, creeks, and rivers. Using worms, dip baits, hot dogs and attractants. But I have never caught any cats bigger than 3-5lbs range. I've read about live bait and tried them a handful of times with no success. I was wondering if there are any tips like locations, baits, and other tips that would help me to land the big catfish I've been looking for my whole 40 years. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks. Hope the fish gods bless you with great weather and great fishing.
Get some fresh clams and set them in the sun to literally rot. After 4 or 5 days cut the clam out of the shell and let it air dry for 4-5 hours. Use this for bait and if there is a catfish within a mile they will come for it. Use rubber gloves to put on hook or use hexol to get the smell off of your hands.
Fresh clams? That might be hard to find in Kansas but I will have to try it. I know shrimp has for me in the past but I will give clams a try. Thanks.
You can order fresh clams out of Louisiana from Amazon
I have been down into kansas trucking off and on for 5 years haulin dirt and rock.we all stay next to the kansas river along kansas ave. I saw a guy do set lines 1x and a guy fishing for blue cats cause they are tagged down there.one man told me all the old boys are gone and they did fish and did know how and where to go...
I have seen maybe 2 guys with fishing rods in back of their pickups. I would love to find some one to take me show me the area more .kansas river is muddy I would think it’s full of cat and other species. I don’t even know if a bait shop exists. Any response would be great. I kinda know my way around some like around the kaw valley area to Shawnee mission like around Overland Park ....

Hi PMWhitley, welcome to the forum. I grew up in KCK and used to fish quite a bit back in the ‘60’s at Leavenworth Co. state lake in Tonganoxie. There were channel and flatheads then , so I’m sure there still are now. I live in Lawrence now so haven’t fished there in years. Eastern Oz May be able to advise you better; He lives near KCK and is an avid fisherman. I’ve found that the best bait is live bluegill for flatheads and cutbait(bluegill) for channel cat. Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!!!
Hey Paul, Would you happen to know a Joe Whitley that lived on a farm near Edwardsville in the ‘60’s?
Thanks I have tried Leavenworth Co. Lake haven't had much luck there but never tried live bluegill so I will have to give it a shot. Thanks again.

Sorry I do not know him
He was my Sunday school teacher when I was 9 years old. Also the only time I ever climbed on the back of a bull. My mom nearly croaked when she found out. Great memories!! Lol

I’m from Wichita but never been to edwardville. This has been a good year for catching flathead catfish. I’ve caught a 35, 12, 2 tens and a 9 this year all out of small creeks when the water was up. If you know where the deep holes are that is where you want to fish. Flatheads really like bluegill. Buy some worms and go catch them, cheaper than paying 2-3 dollars a piece at a bait shop. I put them in a 5 gallon bucket with an aerator to keep them alive. I use 9 foot rods and good size reels, 25# mono line. 3 to 8 ounce weights. I hook them behind the dorsal fin. They take their sweet time playing with it, so don’t get in a hurry to set the hook. You will know when it’s time when your rod starts bending. Set the hook, hold on and have some fun!
