Mixed school of shad and schoolie stripers was active at King's Park in Newport last night. I got a couple of 6-7 lb. stripers on the fly, and also caught two nice shad, my first ever! Really enjoyed how scrappy they were. I assume that they would be a real hoot on lighter tackle.

Fish were very active last night. I got seven shad on the fly. Had a friend along who is new to flyfishing. He had previously only caught freshwater panfish. He got a nice shad, and then hooked into a striper just under slot size. He was using a 6wt setup, and the fish took him for a ride! The light suddenly went on about my fascination with the flyrod. After a vigorous battle with several sizzling runs, he netted the stocky schoolie and was able to release a healthy fish. Gentlemen, I believe we may have a convert.

Went to King's Park again Fri. night. Plenty of shad rolling, with occasional stripers slapping. There were only a couple of other fishermen probably because of the rain squalls. While I was there not one of us hooked up. High tide was later than I could stay, around 1:30 am. Maybe the bight turned on after I left, but for me it was a frustrating outing. Some nights are like that.

Sun. night: Plenty of bass just off the end of the stone pier. They were rolling on bait for hours. I threw everything I had in two fly boxes, using both sinking line and floating. The best I could manage was a follow. One other guy was there using an all white flatwing and he landed three keeper size stripers.

Tuesday night was more productive. I tied up a couple of Rhody flatwings before heading out. There must have been better than 20 fishermen, with the majority being flyrodders. The whole beach basin was loaded with sand eels, and the stripers where happily rolling on them for hours. My first hookup popped a 20lb leader after a good fight, but before I could get a good look at the fish. I later landed a 22 in. very fat striper. They certainly seem to be eating well.
