I'll be fishing the early AM minus tide (just south of the Rock Wall) and the afternoon high tide (may move to Bay Farm after lunch and siesta).

If you're interested in joining me, post here and I'll PM you the specifics.

Beginners are welcome -- I'll be glad to help get you started and will bring extra rods and terminal tackle (you will need a license).

Time: 0530 (traffic permitting) want to fish the low tide (see 1st picture) due to the rocky shoreline (see 2nd picture).

Place: Ballena beach (mostly small rocks). Park just past 1132 Ballena Blvd, Alameda, CA 94501 before the fire hydrant and the circle with flagpole (see 3rd picture).

Tides for Monday 05-June

Taken at low tide -- muddy sand starts a few feet out -- at high tide water was 10' behind chair

Dang Papa, I'd love to join you but I'll be drivin back from Tahoe that day.
Maybe another time if you go again. Thanks for the invite. Hope several show up.

Hey PapaD,

I read your other post where you recommended to fish 2 hours plus/minus the low tide for halibut.
Is there any reason or benefit for fishing in the afternoon high tide? Does moving to Bay Farm have something to do with it?

Thanks!

In general the 2 hr window for either tide yield the best results (coincides with major and minor solunar cycles and movement of bait fish). The tidal coefficient also makes a big difference.

The location choice is based on how much halibut terrain I can cover with a lure.

At Ballena beach during low tide, nearly all of my cast/retrieve is over mud/sand. At high tide I would lose roughly 30 yards to the rocks (see picture from behind the chair). Since the halibut tend to dive/wedge into the rocks, it also makes landing them tricky.

For the high tide I move somewhere else (Bayfarm or the south end of Ballena Blvd) where the rocks don't go out very far. I also don't like standing in the low-tide muck when I'm fishing.

Hope this helps!

Hi PapaD,
I had some other questions based on what you shared.

1) How does the tidal coefficient affect fishing for halibut? I understand that it is how big or small the tides change, but why does that matter for fishing?
2) Also, I've read that some recommend bait oil or scents to attract halibut. Even though halibut attack first by sight, I'm wondering is there any merit to using scents? Is it worth investing in some bait oils such as pro cure?

Thanks so much.

A higher tidal coefficient will get the prey/bait fish moving more.

Since the halibut pretty much stay put waiting to ambush, I don't think scents would increase the odds of a bite.

All,

I'll be wearing a dark green plaid shirt and a beige cowboy hat. If you don't see me, look for my cart (see picture).

If you want some help getting started or borrow gear, hang out by the cart and wave me over.

See you tomorrow!
