6wt or 7wt Streamer Rod?

I'm in the market for a rod just for streamers. I know which rod, reel, and line I want, but I'm torn between a 6wt and a 7wt

I live in CO and spend most of my time wade fishing and not fishing from a drift boat (screams 6wt), but I want to fish a 6IPS sink tip line (leans toward 7wt). I also wouldn't hate having the ability to use the rod to attack some smallies and the odd carp down here in the Denver area (Also leaning 7wt).

My big question is if firing that 7wt while wading is going to be too much and destroy my shoulder? Does anyone have any experience with this and can share their opinion?

I appreciate all your help!

I have a 6 wt and a 7 wt. I use the 6 for trout and the 7 for bass. I think with a quality rod, you would do well with either. Have you tried out both at a shop?

I use a 5 for bass, have you ever tried that?

Sure, the higher weights just make casting bigger flies/streamers less tiresome for me.

I think the 7 wt is likely more versatile and if the wind ever picks up you will be glad you have it. As long as you aren't doing something like delicate dry presentations I think the 7wt would be better. It also opens you up for carp. If you later want to get another rod having a 5 and a 7 would cover more territory than a 5 and a 6.

It will be way easier to shoot line and cast annoyingly large flies on a 7 than a 6.

Either would work I believe honestly. As for the 7 wt destroying your shoulder, it might at first if youre only used to casting light rods for not very long. But if youre used to it itll be no problem. I just spent a few days casting a 10 wt all day in the Florida surf and my shoulder was fine, but mostly because Ive spent much of my summer throwing the 8 weight for bass around.

Suppose it really depends on the size of the streamers your throwing. I prefer the 6W and have no issues grabbing good size bass. If truly worried about the rods capacity for heavy fighting fish the 6W is great just choose medium action middle road if worried about that strike.

Get a softer 7wt like a Winston, handles big flies and heavier lines, but still fun to fish for trout.

7wts suck. Get a 6wt for now and an 8wt later down the road.

9’ 5 Or. 9’6 if your fishing big water 9’#6 would be and is my choice for over 40 years !
Sm to md waters 9’#5 no issue ,
I fish Teeny sink tips in smaller waters while bigger swift deeper streams I use the Teeny 130 or 200 lines !
Also shorten leaders to 5 to 6’ length , I use 3x primarily but go up or down accordingly !
The Teeny lines tend to sink tip first unlike many other copy cat products . Super easy to lay out and monitor .
