Needs to be solid. Not sure how they're rated but it'd be happy with a rod that'd reel in 25 lbs (I'll make sure it has good line)
If there's anything like this under $100, a link would be appreciated
Cheers

Just about any uglystick medium to medium-heavy will meet your requirements. They run as cheap as $20 to $100 for a combo with a reel. More expensive combos will have better reels. Most of the rods are similar in construction

100% agree with this. I've never been let down by an ugly stick, and if you need a rod to get the job done without spending a fortune, they're a great choice.

Are they sensitive at all? Or is strength their only claim to fame? I’ve been considering one as a beater but I’ve heard they’re not sensitive

I have a light action ugly stik (USG-SP70A2) which has a sensitive enough tip to use as a feeder rod, but still enough backbone to throw 20g+ spinners and bring in pike. It's rated for 2-5kg line. I bought it when I was travelling the coast of Western Australia and I needed on small rod that could do lots of different things, and the Stik and I have remained happily together ever since. I'll be handing it on to my son in a few years to see if he can finish it off ;)

I would shop around on line first on the Ugly Stick. They have nice 8-10 foot rods that wil handle the 20 LB fish and they are sensitive on top. Check them for what LB line that they can use and the weight of the lure/sinker. I have friends that use them for surf fishing all the time. My rod is muh older, buy now I'm on a budget. SSA Retired so i have to use what I have. My 9 foot surf rod started to have one of the eyelets tearing free, so I used a small hose clamp on it to fix it. that was 3-4 years ago and it is still working fine. I just made sure that the clamping part was not in the line travel area.
Penn Battle 4000 combo from Bass pro.
Being an old-timer and somewhat set in my ways,
I've stuck with what works (that I can afford); that said, I've stuck with Ugly Stik rods for over thirty years ! They're reasonably priced ($30/$50 range), come in sizes from 5' ultra-lights to 7' heavy action, and I've only broken two rods (from non-fishing accidents) in all these years ! Prices vary slightly according to type/model, including the original, pro-lite and GX2, but you can usually find any/all of them at Walmarts, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, etc. ! Good luck, and happy fishing !
Their claim to fame is that they are practically unbreakable. The sensitivity is determined by you by what rod and rod action you choose to go with.
Ive got one here.. May actually be classified as a 3 pc now!
Doug, Nice rig, I'm jealous. LOL BTW if you buy some D Rings and 1/8 inch braided Nylon you can insure that you never loose a rod on the boat from a fish or snag. Clip the D Ring to the shaft of the reel and have the Nylon with 2 loops, wrap the Nylon around the base of your rod holders, put one loop through the other loop, pull snug and then attach the D Ring to the second loop. Now you can snap the D Ring to the shafdt of the rod and never loose the rod and reel. Make the Nylon at least 6 feet long and you can grab the pole, set the hook and unclip the D Ring from the Reel and bring in the fish.
