Will be at Shasta Lake in early Sept. Never fished there before... know there are 1-2-10-20 # trout..
I'm interested in 2-4 # trout, although would hate to lose a 10-15 # for the fun. Will probably be trolling mostly. Have rods for bigger fish as well.. need advice on # test leader line as well as # test reel line, lures, areas of Lake, tips on depth, etc. Will have 15 hp 4 stroke & electric trolling motor, 14' alum boat. All service greatly sppreciated!
Thanks! Capt Bridgers
I use 12lb. Braided main line with a 6lb florocarbon leader line on a 7ft light/medium action spinning rod. I troll exclusively with downriggers using my graph to mark fish and then target that depth. As far as lures goes try speddy shinners in blue/silver and the gold rainbow pattern along with chrome and blue Kastmasters. Flashers and a worm on a 2ft. Leader can can also be very effective. I personally like the Sacramento and McCloud arms of the lake.Pay attention to your trolling speed to insure that your lures have the proper action in relation to your trolling speed. If u see action on the surface try top water trolling. If u don’t have downriggers consider using lead core line or trolling weights in 1/2 to 3/4 ounce ahead of your lures or flashers. If u go with the lead core line u will need to spool it onto a level wind type reel All though it’s a very large large lake be prepared to encounter a lot of boating traffic that time of the year. Lots of ski boats and jet skiers! Try to find areas of water that are least disturbed. Hope this helps and good luck! Another note: if u plan on going with braided line watch some videos on Utube on how to properly spool your reel with the braided line. A lot of folks will use a small piece of electrical tape placed on the spool after several wraps of the braided line. This helps to allow the braided line to grip the reel spool and affords a tight packing of the braided line.
