daughter had 2 learn 2 knit in cg boot camp. prolly more tradition than practical. later in the merchant marines she worked with several old timers knitting. perhaps the law was instituted way back when 2 cut back on distractions for commercial fisherman; was and prolly still the most dangerous job
btw: i have an old photo of my great gf capt mclellan west in the bridgehouse of steamship Mary Patten and in the background are curtains he knitted that could be moved about to keep sun outta his eyes
