Here is freshwater info, but you are in Rhode Island and can be asking about saltwater cats. The best rig “for me” and I use all the time for cats and other species is the “Fish Finder” also called “Carolina rig”, both are about the same, many…many…people use them for many species and vary the sinkers, swivels, hooks to what, where they are fishing. For bait, I have had good luck with nightcrawlers. There are many other baits for cats that catch a lot of fish, i.e., chicken meat, chicken liver, homemade bait mixes, cut bait, shrimp, even corn, etc.

I fish in the AM usually start around dawn most of the time, but from my understanding the best time to fish for cats is at night from around 8:00 PM to 12-1:00 AM.

I live in PA. and have not been fishing in Rhode Island so cannot help with locations.

Hope this info helps and additional info can be found if you Google or from YouTube.

Good luck and go catch some!

Thanks for your feedback.I happened to go cat fishing last night at 8 PM. The Pawcatuck River is just across the street from my back yard. It is mostly brackish water where I am. I went up river about a mile to get a little more freshwater. Using chunk bunker on a 6/0 circle hook, carolina rigged,I caught my first fish in about 20 mins.About a 2 lb. der .Caught another smaller one about 1/2 hour later. As it was my first time, I only stayed a couple hours. Probably will go again tonight.

Good catching and congrats! Sounds like you have a winning combination…what weight sinker did you use?

I used a 1oz .egg sinker on a carolina rig The current is not that strong, and the river is maybe 6 to 10 ft. deep during a tide
