Went out this afternoon although it was blowing around 20mph. Water temp steady from last Tuesday still sitting around 56-57degrees. I figure the bass are just waiting for a couple degrees so they can start laying some eggs. Tried some bass fishing and some crappie panfish rigs to no avail. We were just about to call it and I was slow reeling a small swimbait when I got that tug we all love. It took a good five minutes but finally got a peak at what was dragging us around. A nice healthy 6.5# carp. I couldn’t believe that’s what hit my swimbait but it sure was fun on the light equipment. Drag was just singing.

The tug's the drug! Actually I'm surprised he hit your swimbait. That's not how they usually roll. What lb. line did you have on?

Yeah I was figuring it to be a catfish not a carp. Sometimes we accidentally snag them but rarely do they hit an artificial lure. I had 6# flouro carbon on a light action 6’6” flueger rod and reel. Great battle

That battle's gonna have a long shelf life for sure! I can see why you might've been hesitant about tightening your drag!
Love a good carp fight but don’t eat him. You may never get that tast out of your mouth. If you are from LA it’s ok. They don’t mind the taste 👅

Surprise, ya never know what you gonna drag in 😆
Very nice looking carp...and indeed what a surprise and great battle when you least expected it!
Like you said you did nit get skunked. When you get the tug on the line the heart picks up the pace.

They still make good fertilizer

I have an intense dislike for the carp that are in my home lakes of Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend . Seems like every time I’m one the water using a deep crankbait , I always manage to hook at least one , and they are never small . Last time I was at t.b. bass fishing I hooked a huge one , ( thought it was a really big bass , got it to the surface , saw it was a carp , instant buzzkill) got it close to my boat , and a size 2 treble hook bent , came out of the carp , and the lure impacted and stuck in my good North Face jacket , right in the shoulder . I was lucky it didn’t get me . What possesses a grass carp to hit an artificial shad bait is beyond me .
