My dog and I are making our annual trip to Hat Creek starting May 14 . . .
Curious what the stream flow is like given the excessive rain/snow we had recently . . .
Can't wait to revisit my favorite spot on earth, and eat at my favorite restaurant, JJ's Cafe in Old Station . . .

I fished Hat Creek and the McCloud during a photo shoot with Fly Fisherman Magazine in the 90's. I used a cripple Callibaetis pattern with a long leader to compensate for the micro currents characteristic of the water.

Also fished a Caddis pupa at the Powerhouse Riffle before the the crowds showed up...landed 3 nice "Bows" standing on the gravel bar of the island. It was awesome, but never again with those "elbow to elbow" fly guys from SF.

My favorite in Northern Cal was float tubing Manzanita Lake. Now reside and fish in Southwest Utah.

Tight Lines!

I've heard of Baum Lake, but never fished it. A friend tubes the lake also and says is a favorite of his.

I fished mainly Eastern Sierra's...Lower "O", Hot Creek, Yosemite, etc. when I lived in California.

Hey oldsatation, you ever fish in Fall River? One of my friends father in law has a ranch just north west of Fall River Mills. 20 years ago or so we would go up there, and FIL had a small boat that he kept tied up under the Mcarthur hwy bridge. We'd jump in that, and after putting some gas in it of course we would go up the river and man we caught some really nice trout. 18/20" was not uncommon. Good old days! Haven't been up there in about 15 years.

I fished Rock Creek a few times back in the 80's and 90's.

One of my fly tying class students fished there and said he almost got skunked until he tied on my "Red Belly Ant" pattern. He went from "0" to a 30 fish day, he told the club during an dinner meeting.

FYI: if no success on a stream, try a terrestrial. Remember, ants are candy to a trout.

i usually go in early may, which is pretty crowded, but again in october, when there are usually more hunters than fishermen . . .
been going to hat creek for a long, long time . . . my favorite place on earth . . .
i heard the creek is not running particularly high, but when the snow melts that may be a different story . . .

We will probably start having some pretty heavy runoff once Temps warm up (got more snow last night) early season going to be tough. But going to be great mid to late season this year

Was just up there and the flow was a bit fast, but water was pretty clear. It will definitely increase this next week or so as the temps rise. I did not get to fish cuz we were on a mission and did not have time….do have a lot of memories around that neck of the woods too, including JJ’s….good fishing and safe travels! 🎣🐟

I heard the lower Pit, below The Lake Britton dam is running at over 2000 CFS. It's hard to fish at anything over 550 CFS. Even then you're likely to join the Pit River Swim Club.

Where do you drive to to enter the lake? Is there a road all around, or just to the power plants? It’s hard to see on Google Earth… I have a kayak.
Thanks.
