Anybody having luck catching smallmouth? What’s the lure/bait of choice?

Are you fishing quick water, River or lake? If you are fishing rapids with him clear water, I have only used an ultra light rod and reel with 6lbs. Line and a 1/8 oz. Jig head and a 3" chartreuse power grub. It has never let me down. For lakes and larger rivers, us about the same you would use for largemouth bass. Keep in mind that smallies like to dance on the surface while largemouth try to stay deep. Good luck buddy and remember to have FUN.

Thanks for the heads up. Small rivers mostly. I’ve been trying to hit the slow holes. Haven’t tried a twister tail yet.

If you are up for it, I find wading to be a great way to go, especially in the heat of summer. I have waded the upper Potomac and the Shenandoah rivers with an amazing amount of luck. Like you, I ain't no spring chicken anymore so I fish local farms, with permission, they're close to home and no competition. Good luck, Mike

I am an old timer and fish from small canoe which I have setup with trolling motor so I can go up stream and float back down. Earlier in the year the fishing was pretty good but last several weeks nothing happening for me or other fishermen including a guide service I spoke to twice. But looking forward to September.

I fish with shallow running crank baits and surface lures as everything else gets caught up in the rocks due to current and shallow water. I've caught some very nice smallies.

Try 1/8 oz jig heads and 3" chartreuse power grubs. They always worked for me.

I use a 1/4 oz cast master looking casting spoon. I catch small stripers that were born in fresh water. White Pearch and smallies.
