As a veteran Detroit lake fisherman, the most reliable setup I use is a sliding sinker on the main line then a swivel in about 3 ft of leader. For bait my go-to for Detroit is always the tiny little cocktail shrimp and a miniature white marshmallow to float it off the bottom. It's a little early to fish off the dam as water levels have not come up yet. You'll find good access at other spots around the lake since his Detroit lakes State Park and the area by the Mongold boat ramp. There are other access points you just got to kind of hunt them down. Once the lake is full you cannot beat fishing off the dam at first morning light.

If you're fishing from a boat you can't beat trolling a spinner or wedding ring with either corn or a worm trailer

I use power bait on about 3' leader with a size 14 treble hook under a slip bobber off the dam. I haven't been up there this year to see where the water level is. I know they won't be stocking the lake until May but there still should be lots of fish around.

What kinds of trout do you normally catch? Sure bass fishing is kinda fun but' don't like the taste. Would I have to fight off perch, sucker's, and other species before I get the big one.. TROUT
Or..?

Stocked rainbow trout is the main catch at Detroit. They do stock thousands of trout a year and there so there are many large holdover from the year before. There is also a good Kokanee population. Never caught a perch or sucker out of Detroit and never heard of bass being in that lake as it is too cold.

Kokanee, Trout, some steelhead size and there are chinook salmon but must be released if you catch one.
