Bluegill action
Maryland Fishing

I have been to a creek that drains a pond in Salisbury, Md. Bluegill are feeding voraciously on the surface! Used a 5’6” fly rod with 3 WF line to cast a six legged foam body bug. Many of the fish were small, but several were not and provided a hell of a fight! Going to a farm pond Monday morning to see what is happening there…. Will use my 8’6” outfit and larger popping bugs to perhaps entice some of the largemouths there.

Hey Bgorebill
I had the same fly rod bluegill experience on several fire ponds in the Gambrill Park area. White and deep red surface poppers drew lots of action (lncluding several nice largemouths).
As you said, the larger bluegills gave a nice fight.
Good luck, send pix!

Dm Only gambrill Park I know is west side of Frederick MD.

I fished afew of those ponds. Plenty of panfish l. No bass.
Hunted the watershed several times also. 👍🎣

Yep, Gambrill and the Frederick watershed property.
A former resident stocked one out-of-the-way pond with bass approx 10 years ago, and there are a few bass in a couple of other ponds that aren't as heavily fished.

I haven't fished there since early 2000's.

I never saw anyone at the ponds on up in the mtn. Just the one at the park.👍

That is a fun way to catch them. I will be doing that when they move into my area. Thanks for the report. In my opinion they are one of the best to eat. Fish Fry!

Gambrill is actually Gambrill State Park just north of Frederick city via route 40. It joins with the Frederick Municipal Forest. There are a small number of fire ponds in the forest with varying degrees of fish.
