Those chopper blues migrated past the NJ coast back in the spring. A lot of fun to catch. Nastiest fish in the water. Glad they don't get as big as sharks - I would never swim in the ocean again.
It has been many years since I lived on the east coast but, I have definitely fished the Race a time or two. The blues are a great fighting fish but be careful when taking out the hook. They have a heck of a bite. Good luck and tight lines.
Yes sir the blues are just starting to show up in the race Waters at 68 degrees. It seems like the big knot heads around the flood tide. People don't know and have never experienced how hard these fish can pull. I took a friend last year he scream and get the net get the net it's got to be at least a 50 lb striper. I'm screaming keep the tip up and keep cranking. The fish shiny and blue shows to the surface it was a 6-pound Bluefish. He couldn't believe it. I was laughing my butt off. Hey everybody have a blessed weekend be safe catch Em up.
Lived on the sound all my 73 years and Blues are a great fighting fish that attack almost any bait you throw at it. Their teeth are extremely sharp so stay away from that mouth. What a sight when they are on the surface. To me not a fish I would eat.
“Cocktail” blues (4 pound range) are tasty. Big blues are oily and have a strong flavor - not for everyone
