I am going on a charter fishing trip for salmon on Lake Michigan in a few weeks, which I am very much looking forward to, but I get seasick very easily. What are some tips to avoid seasickness? I am planning on taking Dramamine, are there other things I should look into? I’m excited for the trip but don’t want to spend the day chumming the water.

For some reason the Lake MI. wave is a little different most other waves. That is one of the reason is why they had a submarine plant in Manitowac. The wave seems to be a little more conducive to causing seasickness. All of the above suggestions seem to work, sometimes. The last time I was fishing in Sturgeon Bay, this passed Spring, a fishing buddy who was a retired Navy Vet. got so seasick that he couldn't even go out fishing the next morning. It took three of us to get him out of the boat and up to the cabin the night before. He was one sick dude and the waves were not bad, but it was dark and he could not see the shoreline. We thought that was the reason why he got so sick. The other three guys were fine. ????

Good Luck & Tight Lines! What port are you going out of?

Eat well before you go your better off with food on your stomach. And I agree with fsdigest if you are prone to sickness take it before bed the night before so it's in your system. Don't try to stand rigid on the boat let your legs act as shock absorbers and your head won't bobble around so much, that's what gets you sick.

I get seasick very easily.
We went on a Alaska cruise and after leaving Puget Sound I started getting sick. I heard about the wrist bands that you wear and bought one at the ships store, it only cost twice as much as they sell at the stores here. LOL
Anyway it worked for me, but I haven't tried it on the ocean here. So I don't know how it will work on a fishing boat here.

Although it may be cooler than you are comfortable with, standing in the wind near the bow of the boat and watching the horizon will help tremendously.
Conversely, going below to your bunk or into the galley and chatting will hurt tremendously
Do not eat anything greasy (bacon, sausage, fried anything etc.) the morning of the trip.
It is imperative that you DO NOT THINK ABOUT GETTING SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you think about getting sick, then you will!

A few years ago I would get seasick on every fishing trip even though I tried all of the suggestions listed, and then some, and they didn't work. An elderly fisherman suggested that you should never eat anything greasy before going ocean fishing on a boat. Now I only eat cereal and it works for me. . Another suggestion, used by some I my fishing buddies, is Motioneaze (Product Name) which is readily available. It's placed behind your ear. All I can say is that it worked for them.

I start with Dramamine the evening before and the another in the morning, eat some non-greasy food for breakfast. I've never tried the patch behind the ear or the wrist band, have seen several people get sick even with those; I've never been sick using the Dramamine maybe I'm just not prone for seasickness, Thank God. Don't think I could handle that, have felt so sorry for some of those that were seasick!

Go with the patch behind the ear. With just a little wind on the Great Lakes you can get some really large swell. Nothing worse than getting out and feeling sick.
