Back yard bass

Today I went to the back yard pond to do a bit of wetting a line. Using a Texas rig worm, I threw it out a lot. Nothing!! I looked at the worm and where the hook was at, made the worm 'hunchback'. I fixed it and cast again, and caught a 1lb bass. I did cast a few more times and nothing so I was walking back and thru it one more time. I got a hit, and set the hook. The fish took off, with a few jumps and then spit the bait. I cast another time about 10ft away and nothing. I decided to throw back in the same place and again the same thing. I was sort of mad at myself for not setting the hook hard enough. I cast back in the same spot and nothing, so I was calling it quits. I then realized the fish was swimming toward me. I set the hook so hard the fish should have come flying out of the water. It was only two lbs but in that short time he had swallowed the hook. He is now going to be tomorrows meal.

Well, didit, It's always hard to stop casting, kinda like eating peanuts 🥜. I'm a stickler for being on time, so I'll stick to a count, say 10 more before I pack it up. If one of the ten gets a strike or a hookup, the count gets reset. I just allow plenty of time before I initially begin.

Seems like a reasonable plan Nutz!

Nice job saving the day Pat, and you got a meal out of it too.

Yeah Fred, I just don't feel good about it. The hook had tore two of the gills and it was bleeding. Knowing it would not live, I opted to take it home. I have 1lb bass and had another chasing it......to eat. I have caught two bass at the same time on a lure, but never injured one.

Some things are beyond our control Pat, don't beat yourself up. I've been mashing down the barbs on my worm hooks and wacky hooks, because sometimes they slurp and swallow all at once. Gill damage is another story, there's not much you can do.

It’s always fun to listen to “Fish Stories”
Hopefully I’ll soon be adding to the Tales.

Don’t feel too bad about it Harris, sometimes that happens. Bass are pretty resilient, but you made the right call.
