Got out at daylight this morning caught 5 Smallmouth took 4 pics and lost a really big one at the boat. Just couldn't get my hands on him and it jumped shook it's head and broke me off, all within hands reach. Lost one largemouth on a top water bait that pulled off but I got a look at him, probably a couple pounds. Biggest Smallmouth today went 3.72.

I gather you tried a different approach at least a little bit today if you lost a LM on a top water. Top water bites are my favorite!!! But I’ve never caught a SM tight lining and that seems like it would be my favorite. A good fight on light tackle is the best IMO.

Thanks for the post you’re really giving my the itch!!

Another great morning Mike. Just out of curiosity, how far do you have to travel from your ramp to find this quality of fish?

Yea J the wind got up just before I left so I went to the back of a cove and tossed a popper for a bit. That was the only bit I got on it but that bite will be on soon. That's when I normally pick up a Fluke.

Fred, at times I never crank the big motor till I put the boat back on the trailer. An average trip is a mile or two. Usually I don't cover a 5 mile round trip back to the dock. If I want to fish up lake there's another ramp about 8 miles from the house I drive to and a 5 mile round trip hits most of my usual spots there.

So you rarely have to go past The Narrows?

You're right Fred, The Narrows is where I take a left or go straight across between the islands and hit the East and north banks. Then if there's no action I head for Lost creek and some of the many points and coves there. The points that reach out into the deeper water are best this time of year. I might be casting up into 5 ft of water with the boat in 30 to 50 feet at times. Seems the closer to the deep is where the big fish come from this time of year. They like the fist sized to pea gravel rock banks with some red mud or clay mixed in and when you find transitions from big rock to this type bank, there's a good chance to find a fish or two. The lake is rising fast now so it won't be as obvious to people who don't fish here much but I got many of those spots marked or memorized. Toward the first of April the fish will start a move off the deeper banks to the backs of coves and secondary points

Looking at Google earth, I see so many finger points in your lake, I wouldn't know where to start. I wish our lakes were configured more like that. We only have one that's anything like that, Candlewood, but it's also the most crowded lake in the state, especially tough in a little boat like mine. Keep up the good work brother, and someday I'll be down to visit.

Yea there's hundreds of those points on the lake. It being an impoundment lake the old river channel runs up close to some of them, that's where I look for the early bird breeders then move on into the coves close and kinda follow the fish back into the shallower water, 15' to 25' for the spawn. This is a Carolina rig lake durning the spawn and lots of people will stick to that during the spawn. I seldom use one but the do catch a lot of fish during the spawn.
