Grandpa's Moonshine

For as long as I can remember my Grandpa on my dad's side had a brown jug of moonshine in a cabinet in his kitchen. Like any country kid, I knew what it was. It's a miracle cure for anything stopped up from a head or chest cold. One Winter squirrel hunting trip to a thick grove of Native pecan trees on his 130 acres ranch. After a long cold day hunting we bagged a mess of the edible critters and headed to grandpa's house in Roosevelt Oklahoma. On our way home grandpa had me pull down to a farming buddy's corn field, grandpa said, y'all wait in truck and he disappeared for twenty minutes and returned with something in a big paper grocery bag, stuck it into the toolbox. We cleaned the squirrels and walked into the house. We put on a pot of coffee and sit in the den to thaw out. Grandpa poured 3 shots on moonshine, here this'll warm you boy's up. I felt like I'd swallowed jet fuel, cleaned the snot out of anything that had some in it. Cured my cold. Grandpa chuckled, don't tell your momma please? I've never been a big drinker of alcohol, but a little snot cleaner outer and total body warming isn't too bad.

When the first time you took a snort of moonshine?

Patiently waiting,

I have had some real shine. Apple Pie and Raspberry. I bought Everclear in Las Vegas one time and added it to Welches Grape soda and the security guards couldn't smell anything but the grape juice at the Grateful Dead 35 years ago. They had Purple Passion at the store for a bunch more but I simply made our own. Mama and our buddies surely liked it. Stirs up some great memories from my younger days.

Always had shine on hand. Added it to his excellent home made wine.

For as long as I can remember my Grandpa on my dad... (show quote)

I don't rightly remember the first time I had Moonshine. I was in high school though. But I was 14 when I first started drinkin Jim Beam and coke. I just loved the taste. Had a bootlegger lived in Lubbock and I use to have him get me a pint bottle bout once a week.
I would take beer orders from my classmates and then order by the case. I would call my bootlegger and go pick the order up every Friday afternoon after school. I guess everybody was happy, nobody complained.
Paid for my beer and Whisky.

Mistred: No, neither do I. But in the case of shine, it's if you are known, more than you know who! . If you catch my drift. Just Sayin...RJS

The old man got caught in Opelika, AL running (bootlegging) Shine across the bridge into Lagrange Ga., in a souped up Buick Wildcat. Judge gave him a choice, Four years in the Corps or four years in prison. He was 17yrs old when he woke up on Parris Island.

Many years later and after N.Korea he would say, "If I could ever meet that Judge again i would shake his hand. He changed my life."

He always had some shine some where. I was 16 before he let me have a shot.
Mighty Fine Georgia Shine.

The best I ever had was Apple shine out of Roanoke VA. That stuff was smooth!!!

I've also heard that is was the nature of running shine that created NASCAR. I reckon so.
