I’m new to this forum but certainly not new to fishing. Surf fishing is my primary interest, though I’ve been offshore 10 times and do a good bit of freshwater as well. Some buddies and I are headed out to Cape Lookout for a few days at the end of March. Has anyone been out there lately? How’s the bite been?

Good morning BeachDrummer. Glad to have you aboard. This site is Worldwide. Many men and women so hopefully someone will be along to help shortly. I am on the crystal coast of NC. Saltwater is all we do here to include brackish water. Have fun. Be safe and post pics. We mostly start with a Good morning. Basically a roll call you might say. So please join in and let us hear from you.

I've spent a lot of hours on the beach at Ocracoke, but never got to CALO. Understand it's a little more civilized out there now.

So true. After the last big flooding they built back up and everything is different now.

Did you ever meet up with a guy called Seapuppy out there. He's dead now but up to about five years ago he'd go out for a month at a time.

He was absolutely out of his mind. Fished with him on Ocracoke, he would bring a 12 foot zodiac out on the beach and launch it with his dog. He'd ride out to Vera Cruz shoals and wade fish the sand bars a mile or so out. Said he was in chest deep water once in the middle of a school of finger mullet catching monster drum. Kicker was, there were 10 or 15 blacktip feeding on the school of bait. The dog had its own custom made wetsuit and PFD.

Only heard of him. Not sure if it’s all true. Anyone in their right mind would not be that far out. By themselves especially. That’s just crazy.

It's probably true if you heard it and it sounded crazy. Had a few physical problems that kept him in a lot of oain, which opened up another Pandoras box, but he was absolutely devoted to his dog and his fishing. When he fished Vera Cruz he would use a sand spike tree the held three rods. I'm pretty sure he had 2 so that's six rods. He probably caught more drum than the top ten guys on the beach down there. The last I heard he had to move to his brothers place in Florida, the pain pills finally caught up with him.

Heard the same. After moving his health went way down. He couldn’t fish. Was in a wheelchair and on oxygen.

Thanks for replying guys. This same group (4 of us) went last year and had a great time. Caught a lot of reds, the biggest was 34, a few black drum and a bunch of mullet. We’re making an annual thing of it.

Sea puppy does sound like a crazy dude. I don’t doubt the wading/shark incident. I saw the same kind of thing happening one time but luckily both of my feet were on dry sand.
