For some reason I can’t seem to catch any bluegills. I can catch pumpkinseed and red ears just fine. I can catch Rock Bass incredibly easily. But every time a bluegill takes a run with my hook, i can’t get the hook to set. Have I just forgotten how to fish bluegill or is anyone else having trouble?

I never knew they felt different, I thought l sunfish basically fought the same.

So did I until this week. I’ve been noticing Rock Bass and Red ears getting hooked right from the bite but Bluegills aren’t seeming to get hooked at all even when they start fighting.

maybe downsize the hook a little bit more?

Might try a little rooster tail action, when mine get bit I hardly ever lose it reeling it in.

I've had success with the Berkly Alive waxies in green and pink. I add them to small Panfish magnet jig heads and seem to do well on several varieties of panfish with them. Good luck!

Where we fish we have trouble keeping bluegills off our hooks. Use 3
yellow corn flavored salmon eggs on a # 10 hook you will catch them. Under docks and fishing piers.

Man, if you’re catching sunfish and red ears you should be catching bluegill the same way. Sounds like you are getting them to bite but just not hooking them. Are they running smaller than the sunfish and red ear you are catching?. Try using a 32 oz orange jig and leaf worm or piece of crawler. I use that for all the sunfish family and have never had a problem hooking them. Good luck cause they are the best eating.

32 oz. might be a little on the heavy side...

Sorry... 1/32 0z is what I meant...
Try a number 8 Tru Turn hook if you can find them ,they work good for me.
Are you using artificial lures or live bail ? Most sunfish or bream whatever you call them inhale the prey or bait with the exception of bluegill and crappie that pick up the bait carry it for a little distance then stop and swallow. A # 10 eagle claw bait holder works great with white or red 1/2 inch plastic grubs or big red worms from walmart if it is a bluegill it will run and stop everything. Else will keep running good luck keep on fishing.
