My daughters boyfriend and his 3 boys were part of this very lucky bunch! The Sheriff and his seemingly buddy barge owner hosed them $5 grand to recover their sleds and wheelers! Boyfriend had come back with an airboat and the sheriff wouldn’t allow them to fetch their own stuff had to wait 5 hours for the barge guy! Ice was 18” thick but the piece they were on broke off and drifted away from the shoreline! You can buy new stuff, lives are irreplaceable!

Glad everyone is ok Thomer. Unfortunately there's always people who take advantage of a bad situation, and try to profit from it. The buddy buddy system is alive and well, also unfortunately.

Glad everyone ok. Too bad corruption is present. Sounds like the sheriff would be a good Mexican with la mordida, the bite in English.
That is what a State Attorney General is good for, if he is not a cousin/barge owner. Local news can help too.

He contacted the TV station that wrote the report! Hasn’t heard back.

Reminds me of an episode of the Darwin Files...
I can't imagine going out on melted unstable ice, but hey, whatever floats your snow sleds huh?
A bit of a ripoff...perhaps, but then they could have watched their sleds sink or gotten killed trying to get them out huh? Rescuing and saving property in seriously dangerous conditions is dangerous and carries substantial risk...the best way to get the sleds would have been to helicopter them out, but that would cost thousands as well.
Expensive lesson...
Not sure of the legality of preventing someone from going on public waters. Might be time for a lawyer.
