I have fished many an opener there. For daytime fishing follow the baitfish on wind driven shores. Jig and shiner always worked for m.

Are you referring to the open water season opener? Or the river walleye spawning run?

I'm thinking of of the spawn run.

I reckon it's April, and I'm not sure I'll be bringing a boat, so I'm looking for advice fishing from shore that isn't too crowded or a boat livery and suggestions about where to fish.

You could start with Red Banks in Fremont.
They should have everything you are looking for from lodging, shore fishing, or boat mooring. Google “Red Banks Motel/Resort” and their site will have contact information for you. Good luck
