New Zealand Trout Fishing

Wife and I along with a couple we have been friends with for forty years from Savannah are leaving this afternoon for 35 days in Australia and New Zealand. We will be on tours in both countries, but I think I may be able to get away one day in New Zealand for a fly fishing trip.

Has anyone fished in New Zealand? Any tips on where, how, etc.?

Looking forward to the trip, but flight is a killer - 27 hours in the system and about 21 in the air.

Get a guide. New Zealand has some crazy rules about fishing.

awesome place to fish! freshwater try and get a guide for one of the rivers coming out of lake Pukaki or Tekapo. For salt I would definitely book a trip with Top Catch out of Kaikoura, great bunch of guys. (+64 21 843 908)
good luck!!

I talked to a salmon/trout, fisherman from NZ, and he said that you wouldn't believe the size they are, and the frequency of the catch. He said that you do not enjoy fishing anywhere else, even AK. Good luck and get a guide.

We actually stayed at a B&B owned by a fishing guide near Lake Tekapo. Have you ever seen a turquoise lake? Not sure if they still live there as it has been a while. Will look thru my old paperwork and see if I can find it for you. Was awesome and he took me out fishing there. Been a while since then. Like some of the others said, best to get a guide.

Yep, would only go with a guide.

Not sure where in the trip I can fit in, but would rather go fishing than wine tasting.

Thanks for all the good input.

Most beautiful place I've ever visited. Went out on a pleasure cruise on one of the lake, but didn't get to wet a line. Have fun.
