I haven't been fishing since I was a kid, and that was on a lake. Well for my buddy's bachelor party/celebration, he wants to take his brothers and I deep sea fishing. I've never been on a boat longer than to Catalina Island, and we are launching from Newport Beach, CA (I'm in Socal) Friday night and will be out until Sunday morning.

I have no idea what to bring, how much money to bring, sleeping bag maybe? Dramamine? Straw hat? Just looking for some advise here. Sorry I'm extremely new to this lol.

There’s a wonderful thing called a SeaBand! It uses pressure points to combat motion sickness. I hated flying early on but wanted to get my pilots license. SeaBand was the only way I could fly without getting sick. Eventually I got conditioned and didn’t need it anymore but they also work great deep sea fishing!

I would definitely take sunglasses, a hat and some sunscreen. Plenty of drinks if they aren’t provided(but I’m sure they are). Other than that, a fishing license and a preparedness to have a blast! Good luck!

Definitely a hat and sunscreen. I'd also have a sweater or jacket and jeans. You may not need them but mornings/nights can be pretty cold on the ocean. Dramamine is a must if you're unsure whether you get sea/motion sick. You'll have a lousy time and bring the rest of the gang down if you're throwing up the entire time. The charter will have bunks with blankets. Your favorite drinks and snacks. Regular meals are likely provided(though still pretty limited).

Dramamine the night before if you get seasick.

Taking it the day of or when you start to feel sick is a guaranteed way to be the chum dispenser.

Eat and sleep well the day before. Definitely take the motion sick meds as said. Stay up on the deck and keep your head up. Look at the horizon or shoreline if possible. I get sick after 30 plus years on the ocean, if I’m fixing lines while looking down. If you start to feel sick don’t go below. It doesn’t go away it will get worse. Don’t think yourself into getting sick either. Get your sea legs on and away with the boat . You’ll have a great time. Just relax. Andy

Good sun screen and SeaBand works great to keep from getting sick and it is a must have on a sea trip.

Taking a nephew offshore next week and told him to eat and drink ginger products for a few days. Says he does not get sea sick, just want to make sure his first 39 hour offshore trip goes well! Anything to help reduce motion sickness before going offshore. Dramamine last resort, causes drowsiness when you want to be alert and fishing! Try those SeaBand things next week just to reduce chance of motion sickness. Got my fingers crossed he will be hooked on fishing!

Having an inner-ear problem (balance), I have dealt with motion-sickness all my life (car-sick, sea-sick, air-sick - as a kid, I would never last more than ten minutes in the back seat) ! While I was in a pharmacy looking for dramamine for an up-coming trip some years ago, the pharmacist told me about SeaBands; although our flight had considerable turbulence, my nausea was minimal and nowhere near the vomiting stage ! May not have been 100%, but definitely much better than I would have been without them, or on the dramamines ! I highly recommend them !

Get an Rx for Scapalomine patches; they are good for 72 hours and sticks behind the ear and no drowsiness like Dramamine, no alcohol the night before, and keep an eye on the shoreline if possible or at least on the horizon. 50 years I've never been seasick and fish some very rough waters.

Invest in a good long sleeve fishing shirt. They have a 50 sun protection. Large rimmed hat, good polarized sunglasses. Have fun and drink to much beer.

To help prevent the ‘SICKNESS’ refrain from alcohol also caffeine and any fatty foods such as bacon or sausage etc for breakfast. Enjoy when you get back on land but not during or a couple days before. I took guys to Alaska

Sorry my phone died. I took guys to Alaska and if they took Meclazine, wore the patch or band and refrained from the previous all usually went well. Relax and enjoy the trip.

Cooler in your car/truck to take your catch home. I vote for light weight long pants and long sleeved shirt. Definitely a light fleece and a water proof jacket . Yeah I would take a beer. Not a case , a beer or two. I find out in the sun I put away a lot of water. Granted I only take day trips and food is usually not provided, Soda and water are though. Sun and dehydration are your enemy.

Have a great time. What are the target fish?
