Welcome to the stage Kim….not much in the bay really, unless you wanna try los vaqueros in Livermore, or maybe del valle or shadow cliffs. I’m assuming you’re after trout. Good fly fishing up north on the Trinity where they do flyfishing only from lewiston dam down to the main road. Hat creek is a great place to catch trophy size. You could try the Russian river up above Santa Rosa.

Fished this area my entire life. Not much fly fishing opportunities. San Pablo dam, Lake Chabot, and the three lakes in Marin, Alpine, Bon Tempe and Lagunitas. Mostly bait fishing and trolling. Have tried fly fishing on Pescadero creek in San Mateo before, not much luck. I’m sure that area is washed out now due to the recent rains in our area. I would, if u don’t mind driving, head up north. Great fly fishing in the Hat Creek area and the upper Sacramento River. Have seen guys catching stripers in the South Bay fly fishing though. Mostly large shrimp imitation flys Good luck and hook them up! Welcome aboard!

If you want to fish for Bass, they can be found pretty much all over the Delta. Can’t say I’m a lure expert, but most places known for boat ramps and bank fishing seem to have bait shops nearby.

Get up early and be first in line for lake del Valle. It’s a reservoir actually. It is stocked regularly with trout. Go early on a weekday. Be careful of the commute traffic as you are driving into it from San Mateo. I’ve also fly fished very first thing. There are hatches.

There is a creek called Putah creek out of L. Berryessa that is fairly well known amongst fly-fish folk. Dam controlled flow, fly fishing only, maintained by volunteers, flies and nymphs only, barbless hooks. Pretty technical creek, tough casting because of vegetation, particularly brambles…! Mostly nymphs, some dry flies in spring and fall. Closest pure trout fishing creek to San Francisco. Heavily fished in summer. Wiley fish! It will test you.

Spring lake Sonoma county - LM Bass, some trout. I’ve tried it several times with little luck - others have had excellent luck.

Loch Lomond in the Santa Cruz mountains. Beautiful location, ok fishing. Can fly fish there early. Electric boats only for rent, no gas engines allowed. Is one of the water supplies for Santa Cruz.

There is a local guy on YouTube. - I think Fong is his last name. Does a good job with updates.
Best I can offer.

There are a couple very knowledgeable fishermen here from the north bay. They may have suggestions

Alan Fong , fun fisherman. ( utube) He has great videos of Bay Area fishing. He also has a weekly report every Thursday Great info! Unfortunately he’s not a fly fisherman, but great insight about the delta and local lakes. Check it out. Good luck!!!

Hi Kim,

Small world I actually live in SM county as well. Grew up fly fishing from the time I could hold a rod. Anyways some of the info stated above is true but some not so much (no offense to anyone) I’ve fished all rivers from here to Oregon and can tell you where the best places are to go. My brother is also a fantastic guide. Anyways message me for any info you neeed and I can direct you to the best rivers/streams to catch trout!
