Good luck. Just an FYI. Limits are limits, so it sounds like you guys are doing O.K. there, so use this info as you wish My favorite bait, bar none is the freshest fillet carcasses I can get, with guts attached. I have had numerous days when with chicken, old carcasses etc. I have caught a few crabs. While the pots do their first soak, I catch a few staghorn sculpin or sandabs, filet them and put the carcasses in the trap. The photo speaks for itself. Note: the carcasses must be broken up and put in a cage to prevent critters other than crabs from stealing them. Best of luck.

Typical hull with very fresh bait in 45 feet of water. Note how rough it is.

Absolutely. Fresh is best. The crazy idea any critter wants rotten stuff is cray cray. Think about it. In nature if a fish gets half eaten by a bigger fish or bird then the leftovers are FRESH. Shad is really GOOD. Deer and Elk if its years old in freezer will draw them in. Catfish are the same. Oily is good but rotten is bad. Besides who wants to barf while rigging pots. I save my trout and salmon carcasses but I freeze them as fresh as possible. The crab that eat fresher kills taste better too.

Go get’em guys! You have the right bait for sure, the pots will fill up quick with that bait and the crabs will devour it fast. Hope the big boys will be out for you! Looking forward to the report back.

My experience in baiting a trap with week old chicken left outside vs fresh.......Old stinky never produced one crab......fresh was fantastic.
