Hello, I am wanting to go to the white bass run areas around Austin (Canyon Lake - Grainger- Pedernales - others). Will use kayak or bank. Have always heard of white bass run, bit never been in right place at right time. Age 69, so looking to connect sooner than later! Anyone have suggestions? Thank you,
Dan Yates

Hello Dan Yates: I have not fished the spots you mentioned. However, sand bass migrate up any streams that feed the lakes you mentioned.
Example, I was raised on Red River and lived 70 or 80 miles from Lake Texoma, but in the spring we would catch sand bass in the river where we were. I can only assume those fish had migrated all the way from Texoma. Just Sayin...RJS

Thanks for info. Looking for individuals who would notify me where and when they are running. I can go several places in search of run, but would appreciate help knowing where they are. Thank you again. Stay dry and warm!

Well, in most lakes in Texas, sand bass are one of the biggest number of game fish in the lake. They all don't start up a feeding stream at once, but their run can last for more than a month, possibly three.

I am pretty crippled up or would offer to go with you to scout out possible locations. You might try visiting a bait stand or two around one of the lakes in the area. Those folks will know a lot about where, when and what is biting. Also, live minnows are one of their favorites. Just Sayin...RJS

Dan, you should check out the Colorado river above and below Lakes Buchanan and Inks. Every year fishermen anticipate the sand bass run. Keep checking the fishing reports for that area. Also check out Lake Travis in the river above the lake and below the lake. Best of luck😎👍

Back in about 73 we went to what is now Colorado Bend State Park for spring break (so around Easter). We fished from tubes and caught around 50 per day with hair jigs.
The S Park is at Bend Tx above Buchanan Lake

Dan: obviously you will have to wait for better weather. Even if the Sand Bass would be jumping out of the water to bite your minnows as bait, there would be ice clogging up your guides on your rod! Who knows what they are doing in this kind of cold front. Your best bet is still to make friends with a proprietor of a bait stand, or several! Just Sayin...RJS

Dan I had the opportunity to go fishing with a guide to ‘scout’ for fish for a group the next day. We did more talking than fishing. What I learned in a few hours was like watching a pro at his trade. Ask around at marinas and bait shops and someone will have advice. I learn a lot on the bank by asking. That’s probably how most fishermen learned.
If I had hired a guide a few years ago I would be more successful now.
Consider splitting costs with a buddy.
Good luck from Stilltrying

it really hasn't started here at canyon lake. we're thinking in a couple of weeks. we have raced over to some feeding on the top and have caught a few using silver and smoke flukes. just give it a couple more weeks.

Dan, normally the white bass run is good on Yegua Creek (Newman Bottom) at Lake Somerville, Riemers Ranch County Park on the Pedernale and Colorado Bend State Park, but currently none have enough water. We need lots more rain! Canyon sounds like the best bet this year, but I have never fished it. Most places the run is late Feb through March. Good luck.
