I was on devils lake and drilled into the dirt. (Lake water level has changed a lot) Then I put on my spare new blades. In 5 holes I drilled into a road and wrecked those blades. I searched youtube for a video on how to sharpen. but no avail. I looked at other auger video, and got a few pointers. I sharpened the blades with a leatherman file. Proceeded to drill about 60 holes in the next 2 days with those blades. So I made a video for others. 4 different ones. long and short versions. search for ion blade sharpening jsfarmtrees. I hope this helps others. If going on trips always carry a 8mm ratcheting wrench and a file.

The way you asked that reminded me of the time my grandfather's woodworking friend Walter cut his thumb right down the middle to the knuckle. He had a big bandage on his thumb after surgery, and was telling the story about how he managed to do this...I asked him with this dead straight expression, "why would you do that?". My grandfather and uncle about died, meanwhile that lit Walters fuse, he was pissed, he said oh I just thought I'd see what that felt like smartazz, so I asked if it hurt, he yelled hell yes it hurt, what do you effing think?

I've seen on the internet people doing that but didn't know it was done over here. They would poor cola in the hole and the cats would literally jump out the hole. How do y'all do it over there if you don't mind me asking. I learn every day on this site. Thanks.

I am ice fishing. Drilling through the 42" of ice. The navionics map said I was in 8ft of water. But the lake level has gone down, and there was only 3ft of ice, then dirt. Thats why I drilled into dirt.

Holy crap! If I'm drilling thru more than 18" I'm going home.

Now I understand. Thanks for the explanation.

Old trick to find water depth without drilling a hole. I use a liter bottle of water mixed with 2 tablespoons of salt. using a good steel shovel to scoop of snow to bare ice. Pour water solution on ice, place transducer in the water. the transducer will show you depth a the lake and even the ice thickness if you practice this enough. We did this years ago before getting power augers. it slow saved us a lot of fuel with using gas augers.
We could also see fish under the ice while doing our scouting. Even map out a point on the top of the ice by scratching depth in ice with a awl. I showed this to some young guys 4 years ago after they setup their wheelhouse on top of a shallow (4feet deep) rock bar. They thought it was 15 ft. along the edge of the bar.
