HE’S OUR PROVIDER”
Series: How Do You See Jesus ?
There are numerous stories in the Bible, starting in Genesis in the Old Testament, and continuing through the New Testament, of how God/Jesus miraculously provided for His “children”. In Genesis 22, God provided a ram for Abraham to sacrifice, so he would not have to use his only son, as God had originally told him to do. As a result of this miracle, Abraham gave this place the name Jehovah-jireh, which means (literally, in Hebrew)
“God will see to it” - or the Lord will provide.
In Exodus 13-16, God provided Moses and the Israelites the means to be led and fed as they wandered in the desert wilderness. They were led by a cloud during the day and by fire in the sky at night. For food, God sent manna and quail for them to eat every day.
Fast forward to the New Testament and Jesus’ first miracle, while on the earth….
John records this miracle of Jesus coming to the rescue at the wedding party when they ran out of wine - He simply took about 150 gallons of water and turned it into really good wine! (John 2:1-11) WOW!! (That’s about 750 fifths!)
These are just a few of the tangible things Jesus provided in the Bible.
Now, let’s look at some intangible things He provides.
“Jesus told him, “I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6 NLT
As we saw last week, He provides the WAY (right path to take) to get to Heaven. The second half of this verse lets us know He is the ONLY
WAY to get there.
When Jesus was praying to His Father (God), (for His Disciples),
He said “Your word is TRUTH”
John 17:17. Then in Psalms 119:160 it says “The entirety of Your word is TRUTH”.
God sent Jesus, who gave His LIFE, so we could have a better LIFE.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10 NIV
The tangible things He provides today may include food, water, clothes, shelter, sunshine, etc.
You may say “well…I can provide most of these things.” Try starting with nothing, and speak any one of these things into existence….
Not so easy!
Then there’s the intangible things that Jesus can give us - like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self control, a conscience, inner strength, wisdom, and most importantly, forgiveness.
Here are some additional words from Jesus Himself about his provisions for us.
“Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said, “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing. Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to Him than any birds! Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? “Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? “And don’t be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don’t worry about such things. These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and He will give you everything you need.”
Luke 12:22-31 NLT
Please pardon me for being so “long-winded” this week, but please try to make enough time
( < 42 minutes ) to watch the following video of Pastor Jentezen Franklin, titled “The Right Diet”.
Jentezen is charismatic, funny, sometimes loud, and often NOT politically correct, but always very honest. He gives a somewhat different perspective on how to see Jesus as our provider. Enjoy, and may God richly bless you all!
